Unit 8H revision ppt !

Metal Properties
Catalysts
Speed up chemical reactions but are not used
up!
Corrosion
Is when the metal
reacts with oxygen!

Tin + oxygen Tin

oxide

Rusting is specific to
iron only!!
Metals and water Metal
oxides are
Metals and oxygen  metal oxide acidic!

e.g. Iron + oxygen iron oxide

Metals and water metal Metal

hydroxides
hydroxide are alkaline

e.g. Sodium + water sodium

hydroxide

Metals and acids
• When metals react with water a gas is given off and
bubbles( effervescence)
• Metals react faster with acid than water.
Particle arrangement of metals and how they
relate to properties
• Remember metals have delocalised electrons!

• How does their structure relate to their properties?

• Metals are dense- because there is many atoms packed together

• Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity- due to delocalized electrons
• Metals are strong- due to strong forces of attraction between positive atoms
and negative electrons
• Metals are shiny  as the atoms reflect light
• Metals are malleable the atoms can SLIDE over one another so are easily shaped
Alloys
• A mixture where at least one element is a metal

• E.g. Steel = Iron and carbon Alloys are stronger as the

different elements block
• Bronze = Copper and tin the structure- so there is
less sliding able to
• Stainless steel= chromium, carbon and nickel happen

Alloys are used in cars,

medals, instruments,
coins, buildings
