Acer Incorporated is the world's fifth largest computer maker and Taiwan's leading exporter. The company creates, produces, and sells computer hardware and software; it is one of the world's largest producers of individual components such as keyboards, motherboards, set-up boxes, disk drives, displays, CD-ROM drives, keyboards, printers, scanners, and software. Acer's nearly 30-year expansion is largely due to its business of producing and assembling branded and contract PCs in various locations around the world. In over 100 countries, the company sells its goods through dealers and distributors.

Stan Shih, a leader in Taiwan's high-tech industry, cofounded Acer. Shih led his company through many organizational restructuring cycles as well as the financial ups and downs of the 1980s and 1990s over the years. Acer spun off its lucrative contract manufacturing business and renamed it Wistron Corporation in a major restructuring in 2000. This helped Acer put itself on a growth curve in a number of markets. When Stan Shih retired in early 2005, Acer's branded products were selling well around the world, and the company was poised to make a bigger impact in the US market with its desktop and notebook PCs.
