Game Changer
About the Case:
The case study is about Reliance Jio’s entry into the
telecom sector. This case study explains how the entry of
Reliance Jio into the Indian Telecom sector has been,
disruptive and game changing in the Indian Telecom
sector.
1. How has the business environment
altered for telcos after the launch of
Reliance Jio?
The Business Environment pertaining to that of Telecom sector in India got
affected in the following ways:
1)The entry of jio meant Weaker players like Tato DoCoMO , RCOM, BSNL
is almost out of market now, facing stiff challenges of Survival.
2) As the viability of India’s telecom industry took centre stage, Intense Tariff
wars among Reliance jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodaphone ,Idea was seen, with
each cutting prices to attract subscribers. The Market leader Airtel and
vodaphone , Idea was able to sustain the disruption created by the sudden
arrival of jio.
3) On the market share front after the launch of Jio,it by march 2017 it was
seen Airtel was the market leader followed by Vodaphone and Idea cellular and
jio at fouth surpassing the remaining telecos after few months of launch.
2. Can the launch of Jio be seen as a
sustainable business model given the
Indian conditions?Comment
Reliance Jio is the complete revolution in telecommunications world in
India. And Yes, Reliance Jio is a sustainable model and will be profitable
because,
1) By giving free data plan and voice calls it has added over 100 million
Indian users.
2) Its data and call plans are cheaper than all of its competitors.
3) Many people who now understand benefits of internet will continue
using it by paying.
4) Many teenagers who got addicted to free internet will start paying.
5) By introducing feature phone, Jio has played a masterstroke.
3. Reliance Jio is being seen as a game changer in the Indian
market with disruptive competitive strategies. What kind of
HR approach do you think this kind of an organization
would need?

There are many different approaches to human resource management like Strategic
approach , management approach, systems approach etc.
For a organization like JIO, Strategic approach of HRM can be used since Human
resources are the combination of talent and skills, some of them are inborn and other skills
they have acquired through learning and education. The strategic HRM approach focuses
on people management programs and long-term solutions.
It stresses organizational development interventions, achieving employee organizational
fit, and other aspects that ensure employees add value to the organization. People are the
strategic asset of an organization. People have core competencies, they form the basis of
competitive advantage, Strategic approach to HRM is needed for a new organisation like
JIO to identify these core competencies of its employees to achieve overall organisational
effectiveness.
