INTRODUCTION
 One of the most recurrent historical-mythological themes in Western culture is
the Trojan War. Apart from appearing in numerous films and novels, his are
perfectly established in people's daily lives: Achilles, Hector, Helena, Paris or
Odysseus are several examples.

 Despite how deeply rooted the Trojan myth is in society, few distinguish what is
reality and what is fictional. Is everything that is told in Homer's Iliad really a mere
fabrication? Did the city of Troy really exist? The curator Alexandra Villing and the
classical archaeologist Lesley Fitton analyze what lies behind the Trojan myth for
the exhibition that will take place at the British Museum.
BECAUSE THE CIVILIZATION OF THE TROJANS WAS
IMPORTANT?
 According to historical records, the Trojan War took place between 1194 and 1184 (although there
are divergences in this regard in the results of excavations and in the interpretation of written
documents) and took place in the city of Troy which was located in back then in the Asia Minor
region, a territory that today would belong to Turkey.

 The Trojan War represented the confrontation between the Trojans and the Greeks due to
territorial issues, stolen loot, and shipping powers. The historical version of the war differs (as it
happens with many myths) from the mythical history. The result of this confrontation was the
invasion of the city of Troy by the Achaeans and the subsequent destruction of the Trojan tradition.
WHAT LEGACY DID THE CIVILIZATION OF THE TROJANS
LEAVE?
THE ILIAD AS A VERSION OF THE MYTH
 One of the two founding texts of the Greek tradition was the Iliad, a poem created in verse by Homer.
This author also created the work known as Odyssey. While the first recounts the events that followed
the Trojan War and the link between the Achaeans and the Trojans, the second work recounts the return
of one of the Greek heroes to the region of Greece: Odysseus.

 In these works (which were passed by word of mouth since they were established at a time when writing
was lost), Homer established elements that would be foundational for the Greek tradition, such as his
power over the eastern Mediterranean and its later colonizing tradition on the coast of Asia Minor. At the
same time, this war and its myth gave rise to the creation of very special heroes and gods for Greek
history.
HISTORICAL FACTS
 The Trojan War refers to a warlike conflict in which
the Greeks fought against the Trojans.

 At first glance, the only reason why war broke out is

the kidnapping of Queen Helen of Sparta by Paris,
prince of Troy. From this, the Greek army crossed
the seas to reach Troy with the objective of
recovering Helen and in turn destroying the nation.

 The Trojan War is developed in the famous Greek

epic poems that are attributed to Homer: The Iliad
and The Odyssey. The ancient Greeks believed that
the story posed by Homer was true, and therefore
also trusted that the cause of the rivalry between
the Persians and Greeks was due to this war.

 Today, both the city of Troy and the war are

considered mythological. Homer's texts represent
some of the greatest literary works in existence and
have spawned scores of similar stories, books,
legends, and even movies.
FUN FACTS
 According to the Greek epic The Iliad, Prince Paris of Troy kidnapped his lover Helen of Greece, the most beautiful
woman in the world, and Melenaus of Sparta, her husband, summoned the Greeks, they waged war against the
Trojans. This war was the meeting of many of the great heroes of antiquity, such as Achilles, Héctor or Ajax ...

 Homer's Iliad is considered one of the oldest written poems in the Western world, dating back to the 8th century
BC, several centuries after the famous conflict.

 There is no doubt that many of the attributes that are given to the characters, as well as the mystical
interventions that are narrated in the work are totally unreal, but others such as the conflict itself, as well as some
of the characters and the places that appeared could be true.

 Some scholars affirm that it is possible that the events related were not due to a single conflict, but that they
compiled and mythologized several facts.
THE IMPORTANCE OF CIVILIZATION
 Perhaps one of the most significant
warlike events of antiquity, the Trojan
War became in history a central
milestone in understanding the might
of Greece and the shaping of its
identity in the Mediterranean.

 The Trojan horse was a device in the

shape of a huge wooden horse that is
mentioned in the history of the Trojan
War and that according to this story
was used by the Achaeans as a strategy
to enter the fortified city of Troy

 To be in front of the classical Greek

culture is to be in front of the mother
of culture that we take for ourselves
today. Greece represents the root of all
forms of expression of Western art, in
this way, its aesthetics and virtues can
be seen represented in the works of
Homer
