River Water Dispute

Water dispute started in Punjab opposed the
1966,when the Punjab and
Haryana. This emerged a need
sharing of river

they have no water to spare.
Protest ,Construction and Accord
• On 31December 1981 an agreement is made among Punjab and Haryana toto reallocate the water (overall national
interest and for optimum utilization of water) . The SYL (Sutlej –Yamuna link) canal was the result of the agreement
• A stretch of 214 Km is constructed out of which 122km would be in Punjab and remaining 92 Km in Haryana .
• In 2000 supreme court instructed the Punjab government to complete the SYL in year but Punjab government refuse and
file the petitioned against it.
• In 2004,by the order of apex court , the central public works department was appointed to take over canal work.
• On 15 march 2016 Punjab legislative assembly passed the Punjab Sutlej Yamuna kink canal bill , to return the land taken
for building canal.
• On 22 February2017 ,the supreme court made it clear that its verdict allowing the construction of canal and maintaining
the law and order at any cost..
