INTRODUCTION

What is positive sense RNA virus?

• Also known as sense strand RNA virus

• Virus which directly encode mRNA and
proteins
• Genetic information consists of a single strand
of RNA
Fig: mRNA directly combine with
ribosomes to synthesis protein
CLASSIFICATION

Naked
Enveloped
(Non-enveloped)

1. Calcivirus 1. Togavirus
2. Picornavirus 2. Flavivirus
3. Retro virus
Non-enveloped virus
> whose capsid is not covered with an envelope
Examples:
• Picornavirus
• Calcivirus
Picornavirus
• • Picornavirus ( pico: measuring
small; rna: RNA virus), 28-30nm, 68
subunits
• Single-stranded RNA virus, non-
envelope
• Divided into five genera: enterovirus,
rhinovirus, hepatovirus (cause
disease in human), arthrovirus and
cardiovirus(veterinary importance
Calicivirus
• virion: icosehedral,35-39nm in diameter, 32
capsomers, non-envelope
• Protein : Capsid protein
• Genome : genome consists of single-stranded
positive-sense RNA (ribonucleic acid)
• Divided into four genera:lagovirus, vesivirus,
sapovirus, norovirus
• Feline calicivirus(FCV) is an agent that causes
upper respiratory diseases in cats
• Causes gastroenteritis
Feline calicivirus
Enveloped Viruses

> Whose capsid is covered by an envelope

Examples
1. Togavirus
2. Falvivirus
3. Coronavirus
Togavirus
• Enveloped, spherical, icosahedral, 65-
70nm in diameter, 80 trimmer spikes
• Consists of two genera:Alphavirus and
Rubivirus
• Chikungunya virus, an emerging virus, is
an important human pathogen belonging
to the genus Alphavirus.
Flavivirus
• Virion: 40 to 65 nanometers
(nm), with an icosahedral
nucleocapsid.
• Genome: single stranded RNA
virus
• Envelop; contain envelop
• Related terms:yellow fever virus,
dengue viruses, hepatitis C virus
Retrovirus
• Single stranded RNA virus, helical
envelope, contains enzyme(reverse
transcriptase)
• 80-100nm in diameter
• Spikes are present evenly all over the
body
• Consist of seven
genera:gammaretrovirus, episilon
retro virus,alpharetrovirus,
betaretrovirus, deltaretrovirus,
lentivirus, spumavirus
• The best example is HIV.
