Nanomedicine:

An interdisciplinary
field of Science
Introduction

Human body is basically an extremely
complex of interacting molecule.
Technology required to truly
understand and repair the body is the
molecular machine technology.
Nanomedicine involves all the aspects
of medicine.
Nanosecine

It involves research and
technology development at 1nm to
100nm range.
A human hair is about 80,000nm
thick.
Definition of Nanomedicine

 The official definition of the US National
Nanotechnology initiative says that: “Nanotechnology
involves research and technology development at the
atomic, molecular, or macromolecular levels, in the
length scale of approximately 1nm to 100 nm range”
 European Science Foundation has defined
nanomedicine as: “The science and technology of
diagnosing, treating and preventing disease and
tranumatic injuries of relieving pain and improving
human health using molecular tools and molecular
knowledge of human body”
Aim of Nanomedicine

Monitoring, Control, Construction,
repair, defence and improvement.
Of all human biological systems,
wprking from the molecular levels
Ultimately to achieve medical benefits
Commercially available nanomedicine
includes:

Abraxane
Doxil
Liposome
Rapamune

Current Status

Growing rate in market increased from
(28% to 38%)
More than 38 medicine based products
are in the market with estimated sale
$6.8 billion.
Application of Nanomedicine Diagnostic

Imaging and identification
Delivering medication to the exact
location
Killing of bacteria, viruses and cancer
cells
Repair of damaged tissues
Application of Nanomedicine may
include:

Insulin detection and improving
healthcare
Cancer treatment e.g: nanooxidation,
gold coated silica used as nanomaterial
Tissue repair and replacement
Advantages of Nanomedicines

Drug delivery to exact location
High efficiency
Molecular targeting by nano engineered
device
Detection
No surgery required
Disease can easily be cured
Abraxane

Used in lungs Cancer and
Pancreatic cell
Doxil: used to treat ovarian cancer
Disadvantages of Nanomedicine

High cost
Difficult implimentation
Nanotoxicity
Nanotoxicity

The nano particle can have all target
effects such as triggering an immune
response, crossing blood briar barrier
and effecting CNS, or can cause tissue
toxicity if not proplerly eliminated.
Challenges posed by Nanomedicines

Environmental Issue
Social Issue
Environmental Issues

National science foundation and
environmental protection agency have
raised concern about the nanomaterials
an environment.
Should dispose in water and air.
Excretory material mostly suspended
in air due to small size which can cause
respiratory disorder.
Social Issue:

High Price
The people with low income
are deprived from these.
