 Engaging in sports and regular
exercises makes the body in
good shape and provides may
health benefits.
 A person maybe at risk of
injury.
 Improper stretching and lack of
knowledge about do’s and
don’ts of the sport
What will you do if got hurt or
someone with you got hurt while
performing physical activities?
Sports – related injuries should
be given much attention because
these involve the musculoskeletal
system which includes bones,
muscles and tissues that may
result to lifelong medical
problems.
WHAT ARE SPORTS
INJURIES?

 Commonly happen when playing


a sport or doing an exercise. This
can cause trauma or overuse of a
body part during a play.
Sports injury occur if there are
improper equipment used,
inappropriate playing area, and
insufficient preparation before the
game.
WHO ARE VULNERABLE TO
SPORTS INJURIES?

A. CHILDREN and ADOLESENTS –


They are in the growing stage that
makes them predisposed to injury. As
they try to explore on the levels beyond
their ability, a trauma would cause their
bone to break an muscle to tear.
B. ADULT – When the body grows
older it is possible to acquire
injuries because the body may not
be as flexible and alert than before.
C. WOMEN – Females have higher
injury rates since actions in
athletic activities are now faster,
powerful and aggressive.
In addition, women are being
challenged to try exercises done by
men which may also result to
injury.
CLASSIFICATION OF
INJURIES
a.ACUTE INJURIES – Happens
while doing a physical activity
such as sprains, strains, or
fractures.
b.CHRONIC INJURIES – Result
from over using a body part while
exercising or playing a sport over
a log period of time
SIGNS OF ACUTE AND
CHRONIC INJURIES?

A. ACUTE – Swelling, Sudden


severe pain, inability to move a
joint in a full range, extreme
weakness of the body part.
B. CHRONIC - Extreme pain when
executing an activity, a dull ache
when at rest

COMMON SPORTS INJURIES

A. Cramps – Spasm is the


condition of a muscle which
contracts involuntarily. If it is
forceful and sustained, it becomes
a cramp. It lasts from a few
seconds to an hour.
SIGNS
Severe discomfort of muscle
groups with local pain in the
affected area.
HOW IT IS TREATED

 Stretch and massage the affected


area.
 Put your weight on the cramped leg
and pull the toes towards the body
while maintaining a straight position.
 Apply warm towel to the cramped
muscle or massage it with ice to
relive the pain.
B. Sprain – Stretch or a tear of a
ligament.
It is caused by a fall that knocks a
joint out of its position. It ranges
from first (minimal stretch) to third
degree (complete tear). Ankles,
knees, and wrists are prone to
sprain.

Inflammation of the body part


Swelling
Inability to move a joint because
of varying degrees of pain.

C. Heat Exhaustion – It is a part of
heat related illness which begins
from heat cramps and can lead to a
life – threatening condition which is
heat stoke if not prevented.
SIGNS
 Heavy sweating with cool,
moist and pale skin
Dizziness and fatigue
Weak, rapid pulse
Dry Mouth
HOW IT IS TREATED?
 Call for help
 Take the person to a cool place
and lie down.
Give lots of water or sports drink.
An oral rehydration solution can
help replace the salt and fluid lost
by sweating
Check the breathing
See a doctor after
