EMERGENCY SITUATION ON VESSEL

• There are many types of injuries, accidents and emergencies that
could happen on vessel.
• It is needed to know some different types of emergency situations
that can arise on board ship. This would help in understanding the
real scenario in a better way, and would also lead to taking correct
actions to save life, property, and environment.

ENCLOSED SPACE ACCIDENTS
• Accidents occur mainly when the ship’s crew enter a confined
space which is not properly gas-freed and has several pockets
of toxic/flammable gases. Many officer still neglect the
enclosed space entry procedures, risking their and other crew
member’s lives. Seafarers must be extremely cautions while
entering enclosed spaces.
MAN OVERBOARD
• Man overboard is a situation in which a person has fallen from
a boat or ship into the water and is in need of rescue. Whoever
sees the person's fall should shout "man overboard" to alert
other crew members and attempt to maintain visual contact
with the person in the water.
PIRACY ATTACKS

• Piracy is an act of robbery or criminal violence by ship or

boat-borne attackers upon another ship or a coastal area,
typically with the goal of stealing cargo and other valuable
items or properties.
CAPSIZING
• Capsizing occurs when a boat or ship is turned on its side or it
is upside down in the water. The condition make the vessel not
able to upright or regain its original position, leading to tipping
over of the vessel in water and making it unsafe for both crew
and machinery onboard
LISTING
• Listing is a nautical term to describe when a vessel takes on
water and tilts to one side. A ship can list either to port (left) or
starboard (right). By contrast, a ship is said to be “trimming”
when she tips forward or backward.
SHIP COLLISION
• Ship collision is the name given to the physical impact that
occurs between two ships resulting in a damaging accident.
This particular collision can also occur between a ship and a
stable or a floating structure like an offshore drilling platform or
an ice berg or even a port.
FIRE
• Fire is the visible effect of the process of combustion
• Fire on vessel may happen because of Leaky high-pressure
pipes, leakage of fuel or oil and exhaust gases.
GROUNDING
• Grounding occurs when there is no longer deep enough water
to float a vessel, or it is stuck on the bottom of water.
Grounding may happen because of bad navigation, faulty
navigation instruments, bad weather, Engine breakdown, etc.
OIL SPILL

• An oil spill is contamination of seawater due to an oil pour, as a

result of an accident or human error. Dreadful oil spill results in
great damage to the marine environment and sometimes ends
up with destroying a complete species.
PERSONAL INJURIES
• BACK/ MANUAL LIFTING INJURY, • SLIPS, TRIPS AND FALLS
• INJURIES FROM MISUSE OF • HEAD INJURIES
TOOLS OR MACHINERY
• EYE INJURIES
• CUTS OR LACERATIONS • HAND AND FOOT INJURIES
• BURNS
• ELECTRIC SHOCK INJURIES
• INJURIES FROM DECK

ACCIDENT REPORT FORM
• An incident report or accident report is a form that is filled out in
order to record details of an unusual event that occurs at the
facility, such as an injury to a patient.
• The aim of an incident/accident report is to record the basic
information surrounding the incident.
WHAT INFORMATION INCLUDED?
• A brief description of the incident
• When did the incident occur?
• Who were the parties involved?
• Where did it happen?
• What was the incident type? (E.G. Fall from height, traffic etc.)
• Was anyone injured?
• What were the injuries sustained?
EXAMPLE
THE SUMMARY
• On december 4, 2017, at 1806 local time, the uninspected fishing vessel
misty blue was harvesting clams 9 miles southeast of nantucket,
massachusetts, when the port clam tank began flooding and the vessel
subsequently capsized and sank. two crewmembers were trapped on
board and perished when the vessel sank; the other two crewmembers
managed to escape and were rescued by a nearby fishing vessel. Oil
sheens were observed.
