Where is chicken most
produced in NSW?

•Chicken are part of the poultry industry as they are

avian species raised to produce meat and eggs.

•In New South Wales, chicken is found in places

located out of the Sydney metropolitan area, such as
Newcastle, Tamworth, Griffith and Byron Bay.

•New South Wales is the leading state of the

production of chicken, producing around 215-220
million of the species annually.

Australorp is a chicken breed
originally from Australia. The
breed produces about 250 large-
sized eggs annually, and 4-5 eggs
weekly. They are primarily used
for their meat and eggs. They
come in colours of black, white
and blue.
Ameraucana
Ameraucana is a breed of chicken
originally produced in the United
States. The eggs the chicken
produces come in colours of blue
and green (occasionally pink), and
lays around 250 of eggs a year. They
come in many types of colours;
black, white, light-brown, silver,
brown-red, etc.
Scots Dumpy
Scots Dumpy is an endangered
Scottish breed of chicken that
is known for its extremely
short legs. They are primarily
used for their meats and eggs,
and produce around 180
large-sized eggs a year.

Last year, 324000 tonnes of chicken were processed in Australia.

Fertile eggs produced by chickens in the breeder farm are incubated at

hatcheries. Once the fertilized eggs have been under incubation for 21 days, the
eggs will begin to hatch. After it has hatched, they are sent to growing farms for
the chicks to develop. When the chickens have reached 4-6 weeks of age, they
are sent to a slaughterhouse. They are first rendered unconscious before
slaughtering. Once dead, the chicken’s feathers are plucked and then cleaned in
order to avoid bacteria and germs. It is then sent to be packaged as a whole or
different parts.
What other products come from chicken?

Meat from chicken can come in many

different forms of products such as
drumsticks, wings, breasts, thighs and feet.
Chicken also produces egg which is a vital
product in the food industry as it is used in a
lot of cooking.

The Economy of the Australian Chicken Industry

In Australia, the chicken meat industry has

garnered a total of 2.85 billion dollars in 2020.
The export value of chicken is $59 million in
Australia. Australia exports its chicken to many
countries such as South Africa, the Philippines,
Hong Kong, South Pacific Islands and Singapore.
