They are elaborated products that are used in the construction of
buildings or civil engineering works.

They are used in large quantities, so they must come from abundant
and inexpensive raw materials. For this reason, most construction
materials are made from widely available materials such as sand, clay
or stone.

They have the common characteristic of being durable. Depending on

their use, they must also satisfy other requirements such as hardness,
mechanical resistance, fire resistance, or ease of cleaning.
STONE
It can be used directly without altering its shape, or as a raw
material to create other materials

The stone has been used as one of the main materials used for
the execution of the different elements that make up the
buildings
 Limestone: Building walls, cement manufacture.
 Marble: Flooring, wall covering, wall and facade decoration.
 Slate: Roofs of buildings.
 Aggregates: Road paving, concrete manufacture.

GLASS
It is a hard, fragile, transparent and amorphous inorganic
material found in nature, although it can also be produced by
humans through sand and other materials.

Artificial glass is used to make windows, lenses, bottles, and a

wide variety of products.

METALS
They have characteristic physical properties, among them they
are conductors of electricity and are good conductors of heat.

They also have high density and are solid at room temperature.
Most of them are grayish in color.
Metallic materials
 Aluminum: It is one of the most used materials for carpentry and building enclosures.
 Copper: It is used for electrical wiring.
 Steel: It is the main metallic material used in construction.

Properties of building materials

 Density: The construction materials are of medium density.

 Compressive strength: Stony ceramic materials are very resistant to
compression.
 Resistance to traction: Stony materials are not very resistant to traction;
steel is very resistant to traction.
Properties of building materials

 Hard: They do not scratch easily, so they are very resistant to wear and
friction.
 Fragile: They break easily when hit with a sharp blow.
 Corrosion resistant: They withstand environmental conditions very well.
