INTRODUCTION TO READING
•A mark is given for each correct answer
•(Band 6: 23-26 marks. Band 7: 32-30 marks. Band 8: 35-36 marks. Band 9: 39-40
marks)
•Answer can be written in either UPPER or LOWER case, both are acceptable.
•The use of punctuation, like commas, hyphens or apostrophes in answer, is not
necessary.
•Spelling is important. A spelling mistake counts as a wrong answer.
•Both American and British English spelling are acceptable but be consistent.
•A hyphenated word (e.g. absent-minded) counts as ONE word.
•Grammar is important. E.g. writing a singular instead of a plural noun counts as a wrong
answer
•Over word limits will automatically be marked incorrect.
•3 reading passages taken from journals, books, magazines and newspaper that have been
written for a non-specialist audience.
Strategies: Overview

• Look through the whole test -> Know what to expect

• Time management -> Don’t spend more than the recommended time (20 mins) on
each passage.
•  Limit yourself to 1 or 1,5 minutes/question.
• Read instructions carefully
• Skim the passage to get an idea of what it is about.
• Scan the text to find the specific information required to answer the question.
• Read carefully to make sure this is the right answer.
SKIMMING AND SCANNING
IN READING
SCANNING

 Scanning = moving your eyes quickly over the passage to locate a

particular word or phrase that you may then need to read around more
carefully
 It’s easier to scan for names of people or places, because they start with a
capital letter and usually stand out on the page.
 You need to read quickly to find where answers are located.
