WHAT RIGID PAVEMENT??

Rigid pavement (cement concrete) is a pavement construction with aggregate

raw materials and uses cement as a binding material, so that it has a relatively high
level of stiffness,
especially when compared to asphalt pavement (flexible pavement), so it is known
and referred to as rigid pavement.

pavement which generally uses a mixture of asphalt as the surface
layer and grained material as the layer underneath

Distribution of Load on Rigid Pavement and Flexible Pavement
How To Make • Design of rigid pavements is based on
Westergaard's analysis, where modulus
Rigid of subgrade reaction, radius of relative
Pavement stiffness, radius of wheel load
distribution are used. For
critical design, a combination of load
stress, frictional stress and warping
stress is considered.
Material • The rigid pavements are made of Portland
cement concrete either plain, reinforced or
Used in Rigid pre-stressed concrete. The plain cement

concrete slabs are expected to take up about
45kg/cm2 flexural stress. The rigid pavement
has a slab action and is capable of
transmitting the wheel load stresses through
a wider area below.
Types of Rigid • Jointed plain concrete pavement (JPCP)
• Jointed reinforced
Pavement concrete pavement (JRCP)
• Continuous reinforced
concrete pavement (CRCP)
• Pre-stressed concrete pavement (PCP)
