PAST SIMPLE
Spelling
• We use the Past Simple to talk about an action that happened at a particular point in the past.
E.g. I operated different types of equipment .
(It is clear that this person no longer operates different types of equipments)
• Use the simple past for finished actions.
E.g. I enjoyed when I left school.
• The simple past is the same for all persons.
E.g. She played the piano very well in the Beethoven concert last night. And we played the
guitar pretty well.
• We Use an Auxiliary verb “did” for all persons.
Past time expressions:
With the Past Simple we can use expressions such as
in +..., year, month, season, etc. Before, and after the centence. The time
expression appears either at the beginning or at the end of the sentence  never in the middle of
the sentence.

 This morning
 Yesterday
 Yesterday morning, afternoon, evening
 Last night week, weekend, month,
year,
 Last semester, Monday, Sunday, etc
 Last spring, summer , autumn, winter
/fall .
 One year ago, one week, month, one
day ago
 An hour ago, ten minutes ago, etc.
Simple past Auxiliary verb.
• Affirmative short
answer:
“did”
• Questions:
“Did”
• Negative:
“Did not” (didn`t)
• For all persons.
Grammar:
Affirmative form

• I started to study at the University two years ago.


• I enjoyed when I left school.
• My brother and me travelled quite a lot
• She played the piano very well in the Beethoven concert last night. And
we played the guitar pretty well.
Negative form

• We didn`t pass oral exam last Tuesday.


• This robot arm didn`t work in Japan last year, and it
didn't work in Peru when we tested it.

Simple Past-Regular Verbs
• The simple past of regular verbs is vey easy. There is no third
person change. The basic rule is to add “...ed”
• Negative use the auxiliary verb “did + not” (didn`t) + the
base form of the verb or infinitive.
• Questions use the auxiliary verb “did” + subject (I, you, she,
he, it, we, they)
• Most verbs in English are regular.
