System of Linear

Equations

As system of equations, systems can also be

reduced into echelon form to determine how many

solutions the system of equation has.

Use row reduction of the augmented matrix to
determine how many solutions the following system of
equation has, if they exist, find the solutions.

  𝑦 =2 𝑥 − 4
𝑥+ 2 𝑦 = 𝑧
  2 𝑥 − 𝑦= 4
5 𝑦=10
𝑥+ 2 𝑦 = 𝑧
𝑦 =2
  2 −1 4
( 1 | )𝑟 = 2𝑟
2 7

2 2 − 𝑟1
2 𝑥 − 𝑦= 4

2 𝑥 − 2=4
  2 −1 4
( 0 | )
5 10

𝑥 =3

Equations are consistent with unique solution
Use row reduction of the augmented matrix to
determine how many solutions the following system of
equation has, if they exist, find the solutions.

  2 𝑥 − 𝑦 =5
2 𝑦 − 4 𝑥 =3
  2 − 1 5
( −4 2 3|)𝑟 2 = 𝑟 2 +2 𝑟 1

  2 −1 5
( 0 | )
0 13

The systems are inconsistent and do not have a solution

Use row reduction of the augmented matrix to
determine how many solutions the following system of
equation has, if they exist, find the solutions.

  𝑥 + 2 𝑦 =7
3 𝑥 +6 𝑦 =21
  1 2 7
( 3 | )
6 21
𝑟 2 = 𝑟 2 −3 𝑟 1

  1 2 7
( 0 0|0 )

The systems are consistent and has an infinite number of

solutions

If the the system is consistent and has a unique solution

If the row reduce the augmented matrix.

If any row consists entirely of zeroes, the system is

consistent and has an infinite number of solutions.

Otherwise the system is inconsistent and has no

solutions.
