SYMBOLS

◦ The symbols of the department of Antioquia are the flag, the coat of arms and the Antioquia anthem.
FLAG
◦The Antioquia flag was declared as a
symbol in 1962 and it consists of two
horizontal stripes of the same length: a
white upper one and a green lower one.
◦The white stripe represents integrity,
eloquence, purity, dignity, and triumph.
The green color is the symbol of hope,
abundance, faith, service and the
mountains, so abundant in the region.
COAT OF ARMS
◦It was determined by decree in August 23, 1812,
and it is represented as follows:

◦A matron dressed and adorned to the Indiana,

sitting at the foot of a golden hill between the
banana and the palm tree, with a rushing river at
her feet, fitting the cap of freedom on her head.
The rulers wanted to record not only the freedom
of the new State, but they symbolized wealth and
virtue with the golden hill, triumphs and victories
with the palm tree, abundance with the banana,
freedom with cap and the Matron the Antioquia
race.
ANTIOQUIA
ANTHEM
◦The author of the lyrics of the
Antioquia Anthem was Epifanio
Mejía, born in Yarumal, who
wrote a poem entitled "El canto
del Antioqueño", a work
published in 1868. Only at the
end of the 19th century, a
contest was opened for this
poem to be musicalized, in order
to turn it into the region's own
anthem. This was won by the
Cauca Master Gonzalo Vidal
and by Ordinance No. 06 of
1962 it was officially adopted as
the Anthem of Antioquia.

GENERAL
INFORMATION
◦Antioquia is one of the 32 departments of
Colombia. Its capital is Medellín, the second most
populous city in the country. It is located in the
northwest part of Colombia, in the Andean and
Caribbean regions.
◦It limits to the north with the Caribbean Sea
(Atlantic Ocean), Córdoba and Bolívar, to the east
with Santander and Boyacá, to the south with
Caldas and Risaralda, and to the west with Chocó .
With about 6,500,000 inhabitants, it is the most
populous department, and with 63,600 km², the
sixth largest, surpassed by Amazonas, Vichada,
Caquetá, Meta and Guainía.
GEOGRAPHY
Antioquia presents a significant geographic diversity
since it combines all the elements of the Colombian
geography: sea, plains, mountains, highlands, moors,
rivers, swamps and forests.
Its coastal contours measure approximately 220
kilometers, which makes the department the second in the
country in terms of length of coast over the Caribbean
Sea, after La Guajira.
It is predominantly mountainous, crossed by the western
mountain range (Cordillera Occidental) and the central
(Cordillera Central) of the Andes, but Antioquia also has
lowlands in Bajo Cauca, Magdalena Medio, and
eastern Sonsón as well as a coast on the Caribbean Sea,
in Urabá.
*The lowlands are green, and the mountain ranges are light
orange.
HYDROGRAPHY
To the north we have the Caribbean Sea and to the
west we receive the humidity of the Pacific Ocean.
The rivers in Antioquia are numerous and establish
the origin of our hydrographic and hydroelectric
potential. The most important rivers are: El Atrato,
which separates us from the department of Chocó,
El Cauca that crosses through the center to the
department and separates the western mountain
range (Cordillera Occidental) from the central one,
El Magdalena which serves as the limit with the
department of Santander in the extreme eastern
region.
