URABÁ AND WESTERN
URABÁ
A SEA OF HAPINESS,
RICHNESS AND FLORA
LOCATION
• It is located where the
departments of Antioquia,
Córdoba, Chocó and the
Darien Gap, on the border with
Panama meet.
• The region is recognized for
having an extraordinary
geographical position. It is a
crossroads between the
Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic
Ocean, the two largest oceans
in the world economy. For all
the above, it is called the best
corner of America.
GEOGRAPHY

• The region is made up by


11 municipalities. Most of
this region northern
portion is part of the
Colombian Caribbean
Region. Urabá is the
coastal region of
Antioquia on the
Caribbean Sea.
POPULATION
• The total population of the 11 municipalities part of this region
is close to 558.000 inhabitants. This subregion combines the
paisa, chocoana and coastal cultures.
ECONOMY
• It is the most important
banana region in the country
and a pantry for this
tropical fruit from various
international markets.

• The agricultural activities,


fishing and tourism are
other important factors of
its economy.

LOCATION

• It is located on the
Central and
Western mountain
ranges, being divided
by the Cauca river
canyon
GEOGRAPHY

• A total of 19
municipalities
belong to the
subregion.
GEOGRAPHY
• The subregion has most of the thermal floors (warm,
temperate, cold and paramo). However, it has one of the
most intense processes of ecological destruction and
desertification in what is known as the Western Desert,
located in the territories of Santafé de Antioquia, San
Jerónimo, Sopetrán and a portion of Anzá.
POPULATION
• The total population of the 23 municipalities part of this
subregion is close to 186.000 inhabitants.
ECONOMY
• The main productive activities carried out in the area are
livestock, the cultivation of fruits, beans, lulo, coffee, corn,
bananas, sapote, mango, the exploitation of wood, mining, poultry
industries and tourism.
