Definition

Hydrogen Chloride
 Known as HCl (hydrochloric acid), its has
penetrating and suffocating odor.
 Is a strong acid, strong colorless acid.
 Dissolving hydrogen chloride gas in water forms
hydrogen chloride.
 It is used in industrial and laboratory processes.
Aluminum
 Is a metallic element
 It is silvery white, light metallic element that is ductile,
malleable, and resistant to corrosion.
 Source is bauxite.
 Used for lightweight construction, corrosion-resistant
materials.
 Its symbol is Al
Procedures

 Prepare all the materials needed

 Pour the hydrochloric acid into the beaker.
 Then add the rolled pieces of aluminum foil
Explanation

 Aluminum dissolves in hydrochloric acid, as a

result of which aluminum chloride and colourless
hydrogen gas form.
 This reaction result is irreversible, because the final
products do not react with each other.
 At first, it seems that they don’t react with each
other but the truth is there is a barrier.
 Layer of aluminum oxide forms on the surface of the
aluminum due to prior reaction with the air and acts
as a protective barrier.
 Acid slowly remove this layers in order to react with
the aluminum.
 Once the acid removed the layer of aluminum
oxide the reaction increase significantly and
produces a lot of hydrogen bubbles.
 The hydrochloric acid turned dull grey in
colour as aluminum chloride is formed.
Single displacement reaction- one
of the element reacts with a
compound and takes the place of
another element in that compound.
Balanced equation is:
 Aluminum Hydrochloric Acid 
Aluminum Chloride+ Hydrogen
 2Al + 6HCl  2AlCl3 + 3H2
 Aluminum has 3 electron in its outer
shell the reaction requires a ratio of 2
aluminum molecules to six hydrochloric
acid molecules.
 Chlorine atom in hydrochloric acid acquires
an electron from aluminum and losses a
hydrogen atom
 As hydrogen does not like to exists as a
single atom, 6 molecule of hydrochloric acid
are required to give three molecules of the
diatomic hydrogen molecule, so 2 aluminum
are required to keep things balanced.
