ENGINEERING
Definition: Engineering is the application of
scientific principles to design or develop
structures, equipment, or processes. The main
branches of engineering include electrical
engineering, mechanical engineering,
chemical engineering, civil engineering,
aerospace engineering, automotive
engineering, and computer engineering. A
person who practices engineering is called an
engineer.
Wikipedia
Engineering is the discipline, art and
profession of acquiring and applying scientific,
mathematical, economic, social, and practical
knowledge to design and build structures,
machines, devices, systems, materials and
processes that safely realize a solution to the
needs of society.
Britannica
Engineering
Professional art of applying science to the
optimum conversion of the resources of nature to
the uses of humankind.
Engineering is based principally on physics,
chemistry, and mathematics and their extensions
into materials science, solid and fluid mechanics,
thermodynamics, transfer and rate processes, and
systems analysis.
aerospace engineering, civil engineering, chemical
engineering. genetic engineering, mechanical
engineering, military engineering. Etc etc.
ETHICS
Ethics
The science of human duty; the body of rules of
duty drawn from this science; a particular
system of principles and rules concerting duty,
whether true or false; rules of practice in
respect to a single class of human actions; as,
political or social ethics; medical ethics.
Wikipedia
Ethics (also known as moral philosophy) is a
branch of philosophy that addresses questions
about morality — that is, concepts such as
good and evil, right and wrong, justice, virtue,
etc.
What is a Code of Ethics
Code of ethics provide a framework for ethical
judgment for a professional.
Note the keyword, “framework”.
No code of ethics can cover all aspects and all
possible ethical situations that a professional
engineering is likely to encounter.
Rather, they serve as a starting point.
What Code of Ethics is Not!
It is not a recipe for ethical behavior rather its
just a framework.
It is not a legal document
It is not a substitute for sound judgment.
One cant be arrested for violating its
provisions, although expulsion from the
professional society might result from code
violations.
It does not create new morals or ethical
principles.
What is a Code of Ethics
Its spells out the ways in which moral and
ethical principles apply to professional
practice.
It helps the engineer to apply moral principles
to the unique situations encountered in
professional practice.
