SUGARCANE
( SACCHARUM OFFICIN ARUM L.)
Botany
- It belongs to family Poaceae .
- commonly called Kamad or Gunna .
- It has fibrous Root system with a depth of
30cm .
- It is mostly cultivated for the purpose of Juice.
- from the juice sugar is processed.
- sugarcane seeds are called Fuzz.
- Fuzz is small and less viable.
- Leaves are large and narrow.
- Stem or stalk is 2m tall.
- Stem is filled with cellular tissue for sugar
CULTURE

• Sugarcane is propagated primarily by planting of cutting .

• The seed cane is the section of stalk of an immature cane used for
planting
and have two or more buds usually three buds are present .
• Sugar cane is a tissue culture .
• It is mostly grown in sub tropical and tropical region .
• Seed cane is spaced 1.4 to 1.8 m apart at densities 10000 to 25000
per
Ha .
• It is grown in various kind of soils such as
Red volcanic soil and alluvial soil of rivers.
• It grows well in hot and humid climate .
ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE

• Sugarcane is a cash crop & gives

ready cash to the farmers.
• It is mainly use for the manufacture
of Gur & sugar.
• Immature greep tops are used as
fodder for livestock.
• M edical value for indigestion,
jaundice , Typhoid fever & for
Headache.
• Pakistan is 5th position regarding
area and production.
• Sugarcane share is about 7% of total
value of agriculture output.
• Contribution in GDP is 0.7% , value
addition 3.2%.
• The remnants of Molasses called Press
Mud or filter cake is used as organic
matter.
BREEDING
• Pests:
• A destructive
insect or other
animal that
attacks crops ,
food , livestock
etc.
FERTILIZERS:
• The main sugarcane nutriet requirements are Nitrogen,
Phosphorus, Magnesium, Sulpher & silicon.
• The exact amohnt of these nutrients depend upon your Soil. But
atleast its a place to start.
• The soil ph will affect the plant ability to Absorbs and
added nutrients nd must be 6.0 to 6.5 For optimal
results.
• Other factors will affect the exact amount of nutrients absorbed
such as heavy S oil which can minimize. uptake of nitrogen.
• Sulphur plays an imrtant role in plants metabolism nd required
for amino acids , proteins and photosynthesis.
• Phosphorus helps the plant to convert other nutrients into
useable Building block with which to grow.
• A Proper amount of N itrogen Fertilizer can increase
tillering nd results in High yield
PLANTING:

• There are two planting seasons

• Rabi or fall sowing in
september & November.
• Spring sowing in Fabrury –
M arch.
• Fall planting starts from first week of
sep nd continue to mid october In
Punjab nd Sindh.
• In KPK planting is done in
HARVESTING:
O ctober & November.

• In Punjab Harvesting
begins in November
• In Sindh it begins in
O ctober nd continues until
April or May.
• Pakistan Sugarcane yield
averages about46 tonnes/ha.
FACTORS AFFECTING P R O D U C T I O N
OF S U G A R C A N E .

• The high price of inputs, low price of Outputs.

• Delay in payments and lack of scientific knowledge.
• Farmers are not aware of high Quality varieties.
• Land under sugarcane is decreasing which is affecting the
socio-economic status of farmers and also influence
overall production of the country.
• There is non-significant association between farming
experiences
and farmer’s perception about future prospects.
