NUCLEAR ENERGY

PRESENTED BY
VENKATESH PENUMALLA - 17PA1A0388
WHAT IS NUCLEAR ENERGY?
 Nuclear energy is energy in the nucleus (core) of an atom.

There is enormous energy in the bonds that hold atoms together.

But first the energy must be released.

It can be released from atoms in two ways:

1.nuclear fission

2.nuclear fusion.
1. NUCLEAR FISSION

 Nuclear fission is a process where the nucleus of an atom is split into two or more smaller
nuclei, known as fission products.

 The fission of heavy elements is an exothermic reaction, and huge amounts of energy are
released in the process.
2.NUCLEAR FUSION

 Nuclear fusion is a reaction in which two or more atomic nuclei are combined to form one or
more different atomic nuclei and subatomic particles (neutrons or protons).

 The difference in mass between the reactants and products is manifested as either the release
or the absorption of energy.
ADVANTAGES OF NUCLEAR ENERGY

 Its good for the economy

 Lots of energy is produced from a small amount of uranium
 Does not emit carbon dioxide
 Generating electricity from nuclear energy causes little pollution
DISADVANTAGES OF NUCLEAR ENERGY
 Disposal of nuclear waste is very difficult
 The radio active waste takes years to be no longer hazardous
 Nuclear power plants are very expensive to build
 Uranium is not renewable and can lead to environmental problems through mining and
processing
