WHAT IS CHEMICAL
DISASTERS ???
A chemical disaster is the unintentional
release of one or more hazardous substances
which could harm human health and the
environment. Chemical hazards are systems
where chemical accidents could occur under
certain circumstances. Such events include
fires,explosions,leakages or release of
toxic or hazardous materials that can cause
people illness,injury or disability.
4 ALARMING FACTS ABOUT CHEMICAL
SAFETY……

about 177 million Americans live in the worst-case scenario

zones for chemical disasters.

One in three schoolchildren attends school in the vulnerability zone

of an industrial chemical release.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) data shows that serious

industrial chemical accidents occur every two and a half days in
communities across the nation.

CHEMICAL DISASTER ARE
CAUSED BY;
A storage tank containing Methyl Isocyanate (MIC), which is used to make the
insecticide Carbaryl was exposed to water that leaked into the storage tank
containing 40 cubic meters of MIC.

When H2O and MIC mixed an exothermic chemical reaction occurred causing a
safety valve to burst due to the pressure and released 20-30 tons of MIC into the
atmosphere within 1 hour.

EFFECTS
EFFECTS;
Accidents or incorrect use of household
chemical products may cause immediate
health effects, such as skin or eye irritation or
burns, or poisoning. There can also be longer-
term health effects from chemicals. When
these occur, they are usually the result of
exposure to certain chemicals over a long
period of time.
