 Is used with the numbers from the class 800 –


Literature and rhetoric
 The 800s are used for works of the imagination,
(works of information should be classed with the
subject)
 Literature is restricted to:
 Works of the imagination that are written in particular form,
eg. Poetry, fiction, drama
 Criticism or description of such works
 History of the form (literary history) and biographies

 There are 3 sub-tables:
 Table 3A works by or about individual
author
 Table3B works by or about more than one
authors
 Table3C only used when an extra aspect of
the work needs to be added
 Literature is first treated according to the language
in which it was originally written.
 The 800s are divided into ….800-809 and so on

 The literary form of the form is considered next. Forms
in Table 3 Include:
-1 Poetry
-2 Drama
-3 Fiction
-4 Essays
And so on ……..

How to add from T3

 First
decide whether the work is
by one author or more than one

1. Determine the original language . Use the schedules (810-890) to


find base number for the language eg. English 82
***The numbers from T3 can only be added to a base number,
which is identified by the words “base number” or an asterisk(*). If
not, do not add from T3.
Eg. Navaho poetry 897.2

 If there is a specific literary form:
Use T 3-A to find the number for the form eg. Poetry -1
Add it to the base number
eg. English poetry 82 + 1 = 821
If there is no specific literary form:
Go to the instruction under -8 in T 3-A
 If there is a specific period:
Use the schedules (810-890) to find the period table
eg. English poetry of the Victorian period 821 + 8 = 821.8

 Determine the original language


Use the schedules to find the base number for the language
eg. Chinese 895.1
 If there is a specific literary form:
Use T 3-B to find the number for the form eg. Drama -2
Add it to the base number
eg. Chinese Drama 895.1 + 2 = 895.12
If there is no specific literary form:
Go to the instruction under -01-09 in T3-B

T-3B Works by or more than ONE author

 If the literary form can be specified further (eg. Tragedy)


Use T3-B to find the more specific form
eg. Tragedy -20512
Add to base number
eg. China tragedy 895.1 + 205 = 895.1 20512
If the literary form cannot be specified further (eg. Tragedy), and
if there is a specific period, go to next step
 If there is specific period:
Use the scheduled to find the period table
eg. Chinese drama of Ming Dynasty
895.12 + 46 = 895.1246
