Integrity
• It is a character trait that reflects a person’s degree of
honesty, adherence to moral principles and a complete
harmony of one’s thought, speech and action.

• A person with integrity is guided by a moral compass and


possess consistency in character.

• Integrity is forfeit if someone does something that should


not be done or refrains from doing something ought to be
done, for personal advantage.
Types of Integrity
1. Professional Integrity- Willingness to do the right
things in one’s profession. One without professional
integrity may commit or turn a blind eye to actions
that are against the ethics of his profession.

2. Political Integrity- Integrity is important for


politicians because they are chosen, appointed, or
elected to serve society.
3. Academic Integrity- Academic integrity is the
commitment to and demonstration of honest and moral
behavior in an academic setting. In simplest terms, it
requires acknowledging the contributions of other
people.

4. Integrity in Daily Transactions- As a responsible


citizen we are all obliged to maintain integrity in all our
daily transactions irrespective of our position or
profession.
Service Learning
It is a structured learning approach that incorporates
community service along with formal instruction,
reflection, and explicit learning objectives. It is a non-
profit activity included as a part of teaching learning
process. It involves identifying the concerns of the
community , addressing them using the technical
knowledge and finally reflecting on the experience.

Service Learning Examples
• In a course on community health, students can initiate
programs to create awareness among parents about
child malnourishment.

• In a course on town planning, students can do


projects on better waste disposal and try to get them
implemented.
Civic Virtues

• Civic virtue is morality or a standard of


righteous behavior in relationship to a citizen's
involvement in society. An individual may
exhibit civic virtue by voting, by paying tax, by
following road safety rules, by volunteering,
by organizing a book group, or even by
attending a PTA meeting.
Categorization of Civic Virtues
• Civic Knowledge- A citizen must be aware of his
rights, duties and responsibilities. He should be
knowledgeable about the constitution and also about
the responsibilities of the government.

• Self Restraint- In an autocracy or dictatorship,


authority has unlimited power and relies upon force
to maintain social order whereas in a democracy
citizens must control themselves in order to maintain
social order and safety.
• Assertion- It arises from self-esteem. If the
government/authority usurps human rights, it
is the duty of the citizens to abolish or alter the
government/authority.

• Self Reliance- A citizen should be able to


provide for himself without becoming a
burden to society. He should work and enjoy
the fruits of labor.
