EM316EUSM
Technical details
Power requirements
 EM316EUSM is a new generation board
 Consumes 8 watts typical, 12.2 watts maximum
 Not suitable for use in old 1 slot chassis (NC316BU-1/AC or DC)
 MUST use new chassis:
NC316BU-1/15AC Single-slot chassis 15W with internal 90-240V AC power supply.
Desk Top.
NC316BU-1/15DC Single-slot chassis 15W with internal -48V DC power supply.
Desk Top.

 When used on 16 slot chasis, it may be used in old NC316BU-16/AC

and DC chassis, but only if few cards are inserted.
 The recommended chasis options are:

NC316BU-16/15AC 16-slot Chassis with Internal 90-240V AC Power Supply (Three

single slot and two four slot blank panels included); 15W/3A
average power per slot.
NC316BU-16/15DC 16-slot Chassis with Internal -48V DC Power Supply (Three single
slot and two four slot blank panels included); 15W/3A average
power per slot.

48
Management requirements

 The linux management card is needed to manage EUSM

EM316LNXNM-OT Fiber Driver Optical Multi Service Platform -

Network Management Module
(IP/SNMP/CLI/Web Management).

 The old EM316NM management card is NOT

compatible with EUSM and other new
generation cards

49
Operational Mode

 The operational mode (CO or CPE) for the EUSM module is set by
DIP switches F01-F03 on switch block SW1. The mode cannot be
changed through LNXNM management.
• CO = Central Office
• CPE = Customer Premises Equipment
 Remote EUSM CPE modules are managed by their respective CO
modules using the IEEE 802.3AH-2004 protocol standard with MRV
extensions.
 A EM316LNXNM-OT (LNXNM) network management module
located in the CO chassis configures and monitors each
EM316EUSM pair.
 The LNXNM also facilitates field upgrades of the EUSM firmware.

50
Port Characteristics

 SFP ports support a wide selection of MSA-compliant transceivers

• Single-mode or multi-mode
• Dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM)
• Coarse wave division multiplexing (CWDM)
 Choice of copper or fiber media for connecting user devices
 Copper RJ-45 user access port supports multiple modes
• Auto-negotiation (1000-F, 100-F, 100-H, 10-F, 10-H) and auto-
sensed MDI/MDIX
• Fixed-speed and duplex (100-F, 100-H, 10-F, 10-H) with specified
MDI/MDIX

51
Data Trafic Features

 Jumbo Frames up to 9600 bytes

 Traffic Statistics (RMON 1, 2, 3 & 9 )
 Link Integrity Notification (LIN) - propagation of link status end-to-
end
 Vlan Support
 Transparent OAMPDU

52
Data Traffic Features – Redundant paths

 Redundant Trunks

 Dual homing

53
LIN
 Link Integrity Notification (LIN) - propagation of link status end-to-
end

When LIN is enabled (on both CO and CPE):

User Fault: The CO (or CPE) informs the CPE (or CO) when it detects link-down on its user
port. The CPE (or CO) then disables its user port transmitter. Both trunk transmitters
remain enabled to retain COCPE communication. Likewise, the CO (or CPE) informs the CPE
(or CO) when it detects link-up on its local user port so that the disabled transmitter can be
re-enabled.
Trunk Fault: When the CO or CPE detect a trunk path failure, they each disable their user
port transmitter. When the trunk is restored and full CO-CPE communication resumes,
both user port transmitters are reenabled.
The EM316EUSM protects against the CO and CPE deadlock condition where both user
transmitters remain disabled if they both lose link simultaneously. To avoid this deadlock,
only the CO disables its user port transmitter when both CO and CPE user links are lost
simultaneously. Once the CPE user port recovers, the CO re-enables its user transmitter.
54
Vlan Support

 Access control: Permit or Deny specific Vlan Ids

 Stacking/Stripping:

fiberdriver(port/c.s.p)# vlan-tag add vid <0-4095> priority <0-7>

fiberdriver(port/c.s.p)# vlan-tag strip

55
VLAN Translation

 Each EUSM module (CO and CPE) may be configured to translate

the VLAN ID from one value to another in tagged frames out of the
trunk port. Up to four VLAN IDs may be configured for translation.

fiberdriver(slot/c.s)# vid-map <0-4095> <0-4095>

56
Rate limiting

 Per port: The amount of incoming traffic may be restricted on the

user port from the slot level of the CLI. Storm control is also
available to protect against frame flooding.Rate limit values are
expressed in units of 1 Kbps.

fiberdriver(slot/c.s)# user-port-limit <0-1000000>

 Per Flow: Up to 32 specific VLAN data flow traffic may be restricted by VLAN ID and
frame priority. The limit granularity for 1000Mbps traffic is approximately 1.95Mbps.
The limit granularity for 100Mbps traffic is approximately 195Kbps. The limit
granularity for 10Mbps traffic is approximately 19.5Kbps.The system maintains
counters for frames and octets in defined VLAN flows. These counters offer a
secondary use for VLAN thresholds to simply count bandwidth by virtual circuit.

fiberdriver(slot/c.s)# flow <1-4095> <0-8> <0-1000000> active|notInService

57
Flow and Rate limit

58
Rate limiting of flood packets

 To guard against excessive traffic bursts that can overwhelm

network devices, independent limits may be configured for
broadcast, multicast, or unicast frames. The limit are defined in
units of 1000 frames per second, ranging from 0 to 255. A limit of 0
allows unlimited traffic.
 Active limits apply to all module ports, so they should be set only
on the CPE or CO and not on both modules. Multicast limits may
be set only on the CO EM316EUSM.

fiberdriver(slot/c.s)# storm-control broadcast <0-255>

fiberdriver(slot/c.s)# storm-control multicast <0-255>
fiberdriver(slot/c.s)# storm-control unicast <0-255>

59
Classification

 The EUSM may be configured to classify traffic going out from a

user port by IP (v4 or v6) DSCP/TOS value or by VLAN priority (IEEE
802.1p). If both parameters are present, then IP DSCP/TOS is used
for classification.
 Relevant when the CO and CPE user ports operate at different
speeds, and it should be configured on the slower port only.

fiberdriver(slot/c.s)# cos ...

 DSCP Remarking

60
OAM Features

 Digital Diagnostics: monitors Tx power, Rx power and

temperature of all SFPs in the EUSM
fiberdriver(slot/1.13)# show digital-diagnostics

1.13.3 Ok 39 3.304 -2.305 -2.27 8.314

 Copper Ethernet Cable Test (E-TDR): The EM316EUSM copper port (P4) can
perform cable integrity tests using Time Domain Reflectometry(TDR). It can test
cable quality, connectors, and terminations including approximate distance to
the fault. Results are most accurate if all data is stopped and the port is set to
10Mbps with full duplex. Dual-homing, LIN, and loopback should be disabled
during testing, and the copper port must be 'preferred' and enabled.

EM316LNX-OT Management Features

 IEEE 802.3AH: EM316EUSM CO and CPE modules use the

Operations, Administration, and Maintenance (OAM)
protocol (as defined in IEEE 802.3ah) plus numerous
MRV extensions to exchange managementinformation.
Normal operational exchanges observe the ten frames
per second limitation.
 Field Upgrade
– The EUSM cards, unlike the simpler EM316EFRM, run
upgradeable firmware
– The LNXNM (management card) can store teh EUSM
firmware locally or on a TFTP server.
– The TFTP server is preferred, especiall in large
systems
– The LNXNM sends the code to the locally connected
EUSM (CO)
– Then the CO EUSM sends teh code to the remote
CPE EUSM.
