FILIPINO VALUES AND TRAITS
Tourists who have visited the Philippines can never forget:
HOSPITALITY
• Filipinos welcome their guest and tourist as if
their own brothers and sisters.
• They always make their guest feel at home
• Spend a lot of money when a visitor came just
to make them satisfied.
RESPECT FOR ELDERS
• Using “Po, opo” in a conversation
• Greeting their elders and kissing their
forehead.
• “Tito, tita, lolo, lola, manong, aleng”
CLOSE FAMILY TIES
• Tight relationship with families.
• Fond of having reunions during
birthdays, holidays, fiestas year-round.
• Even opt to live in a big house where
evreyone can stay together.
CHEERFUL PERSONALITY
• The habit of smiling and laughing a lot.
• Smiling has been the coping strategy for
many Filipinos especially during trying
times and calamities.
SELF-SACRIFICE
• An extension to Filipino Hospitality
• They wish comfort and a better life for
their family and would even go abroad to
earn money.
• When the eldest among the children
would give up school to provide for the
rest of the family and educate for his or
her siblings
BAYANIHAN
• The spirit of communal unity and
cooperation.
• Giving without expecting for a return.
• It may not always in a monetary form, but
the time and effort they give also count as
a form of help.
“BAHALA NA”
• A Filipino version of “Hakuna Matata”
meaning NO WORRIES.
• Originated from “Bathala na” means
leaving everything to God.
• Something similar to cheerful and
positive attitude of Filipinos and
allowing situations to take care of
themselves instead of worrying.
COLONIAL MENTALITY

• Lack of patriotism attitude


where Filipinos favor foreign
products more than their own.
“MANANA HABIT”
• Term for Procrastination.
• “mamaya na” means dawdling
things, which could have been
done in earlier times.
“NINGAS KUGON”
• “Ningas” means flame, “ kugon” is a Filipino
term for Cogon grass that easily burns out after it
is put into flames.
• The attitude of eagerly starting things but
quickly loosing eagerness soon after
experiencing.
• “Laziness is the common problem among
Filipinos that is why Filipinos are regarded as
“JUAN TAMAD”.
PRIDE ”
• Most Filipinos hold on to their pride as if
they are more precious than keeping a
good relationship to their family and loved
ones.
• They find it too hard to apologize and wait
until the other party asks for an apology.
CRAB MENTALITY
• Resenting the achievement of
others instead of feeling happy for
them.
FILIPINO TIME
• Attitude of arriving late at
commitments, dinner or parties
• Not observing punctuality
HOW TO BE A GOOD FILIPINO?

• Be an active Filipino citizen


• Study the Philippine History
• Support local Products
• Speak the Filipino Language
• Do not spread fake news and be
democratic in engaging with dissent
