After being court-martialled, Rizal
returned to his cell in Fort Santiago
to prepare his rendezvous with
destiny

𝓡𝓸𝓭𝓻𝓲𝓰𝓾𝓮𝔃, read Rizal’s sentence –
he will be shot at the back by firing
squad at 7:00AM in Bagumbayan
7:00AM– Rizal was moved to
the prison chapel where he
spent his last moments.
His first visitors were Jesuit priests:
1. 𝓕𝓻. 𝓜𝓲𝓰𝓾𝓮𝓵 𝓢𝓪𝓭𝓮𝓻𝓻𝓪 𝓜𝓪𝓽𝓪; (Rector
of the Ateneo Municipal) and
2. 𝓕𝓻. 𝓛𝓾𝓲𝓼 𝓥𝓲𝔃𝓪 (Jesuit teacher)
7:15AM – Rizal reminded 𝓕𝓻.
𝓛𝓾𝓲𝓼 𝓥𝓲𝔃𝓪 the statuette of Sacred
Heart of Jesus whom he carved
as a student in Ateneo.
8:00AM – Rizal had a
breakfast with
𝓕𝓻. 𝓐𝓷𝓽𝓸𝓷𝓲𝓸 𝓡𝓸𝓼𝓮𝓵𝓵.
After his breakfast, his
attorney,𝓛𝓽. 𝓛𝓾𝓲𝓼 𝓣𝓪𝓿𝓲𝓮𝓵
𝓓𝓮 𝓐𝓷𝓭𝓻𝓪𝓭𝓮 came.
9:00AM – 𝓕𝓻. 𝓕𝓮𝓭𝓮𝓻𝓲𝓬𝓸 𝓕𝓪𝓾𝓻𝓪
arrived. Rizal reminded the priest
of his earlier prophecy about Rizal.
10:00AM – More Jesuit priests
•𝓕𝓻. 𝓙𝓸𝓼𝓮 𝓥𝓲𝓵𝓪𝓬𝓵𝓪𝓻𝓪
- Rizal’s teacher at Ateneo
•𝓕𝓻. 𝓥𝓲𝓬𝓮𝓷𝓽𝓮 𝓑𝓪𝓵𝓪𝓰𝓾𝓮𝓻
- Jesuit missionary in Dapitan had
visited him.
After then, he was interviewed
by 𝓢𝓪𝓷𝓽𝓲𝓪𝓰𝓸 𝓜𝓪𝓽𝓪𝓲𝔁 for the
newspaper El Heraldo de
Madrid.
12:00-3:30PM – Rizal was left alone
in his cell. He took his lunch and
finished his farewell poem, he hid it
inside his alcohol cooking stove which
was given by 𝓟𝓪𝔃 𝓭𝓮 𝓟𝓪𝓻𝓭𝓸 𝓓𝓮
𝓣𝓪𝓿𝓮𝓻𝓪; wife of Juan Luna during his
visit in Paris in 1980.
He also wrote his last letter
to 𝓑𝓵𝓾𝓶𝓮𝓷𝓽𝓻𝓲𝓽𝓽.
3:30PM
• 𝓕𝓻. 𝓥𝓲𝓬𝓮𝓷𝓽𝓮 𝓑𝓪𝓵𝓪𝓰𝓾𝓮𝓻
returned to his cell and discussed
with Rizal his retraction letter.
4:00PM
•𝓣𝓮𝓸𝓭𝓸𝓻𝓪 𝓐𝓵𝓸𝓷𝔃𝓸 visited him. Rizal
gave the alcohol cooking stove to
Trinidad which contains his last
farewell poem.
6:00PM
• 𝓓𝓸𝓷 𝓢𝓲𝓵𝓿𝓲𝓷𝓸 𝓛𝓸𝓹𝓮𝔃 dean of
Manila Cathedral visited him.
8:00PM – Rizal had his last supper. He
told 𝓒𝓪𝓹𝓽. 𝓓𝓸𝓶𝓲𝓷𝓰𝓾𝓮𝔃
that he forgave his enemies including the
military judges who condemned him to
death.
9:30PM – Rizal was visited by
𝓓𝓸𝓷 𝓖𝓪𝓼𝓹𝓪𝓻 𝓒𝓮𝓼𝓽𝓪ñ𝓸, fiscal of the
Royal Audience de Manila
10:00PM – The draft of the
retraction letter sent by the anti-
Filipino 𝓐𝓻𝓬𝓱. 𝓑𝓮𝓻𝓷𝓪𝓻𝓭𝓲𝓷𝓸
𝓝𝓸𝔃𝓪𝓵𝓮𝓭𝓪 was given by Fr.
Balaguer to Rizal for his signature.
He had rejected it.
𝕯𝖊𝖈𝖊𝖒𝖇𝖊𝖗 30, 1896
3:00AM – Rizal heard mass ,
confessed his sins, and took Holy
Communion.
5:30AM – Rizal took his last
breakfast on earth.
𝓙𝓸𝓼𝓮𝓹𝓱𝓲𝓷𝓮 𝓑𝓻𝓪𝓬𝓴𝓮𝓷 arrived
together with Rizal’s sister, Josefa,
with tears in her eyes, bade him
farewell. Rizal embraced her for the
last time.

At about 6:30AM, a trumpet
sounded a Fort Santiago, a signal to
begin the death march to
Bagumabayan, the designation place
for the execution

– a Spanish military physician,
asked his permission to feel his
pulse.
At exactly 7:03AM, Rizal died in
the bloom of manhood – aged 35
years, 5 months and 11 days
