• In this presentation we are going to discuss the language features present in
this passage .
SIMILE
• This is the indirect comparison whereby one thing is compared to another
thing using the following phrases as … as … and like
Examples
• he dragged and batted the body about as if it were a fish.
• Ivory claws as long as her fingers .
• He sent up a wailing like all the spirits of the dead .
• The bear lay in a heap nearby, motionless and massive as mountain
• Only clung to the tree like a frightened child to its mother
REPETETION
• This is when a word or a phrase is used more than once in a piece of writing.
Examples
• She thrusted again and again
• She kept climbing higher higher
THIRD PERSON POINT OF VIEW
• The use of third person pronouns in a piece of writing .
Examples
• He retched again
• She could not hold her breath much longer
• The grizzly twisted his claws
• She had it
• She dared not to move
PARENTHESIS
• This is an act of giving more information in apiece of writing by the use of
comma , semi colon,colon,brackets and dashes.
Examples
• In the woods she comes across a corpse of a man , who had been killed by a
grizzly bear.
• He shoved at her with his muzzle, but , screaming inside, she didn’t twitch a
muscle
• The girls hand closed around something – the corpses broken sheen bone
RHETORICAL QUESTIONS
• Question’s that do not demand an answer
Example
• could it be over so quickly ?
• Was the bear still here?
SHORT SENTENCES
• These are short simple sentences which is not so complexed .
Examples
• her legs buckled
• Then there was quiet
• Her lungs ached
ELLIPSES
• This is indicated with the use of three dots(…) which represents something
incomplete .

Examples
• Danger of being taken, the bear charges …
ONOMATOPOEIA
• This is when words of a certain action imitate the actions them selves.
Examples
• The bears roar seemed to shake the tree
HYPERBOLE

• This is the exaggeration of incidents/events in a writing

Example
• he sent up a wailing like all the spirit of the dead
FLASHBACK
• This is when past events interact with current events
Examples
• Everything her father had tried to teach her from the story of his battle with
the she bear rose to the surface her mind and body
