 Activity - Fact or Bluff: Knowing the

Nature and Characteristics of

Research
 Directions: Say “FACT” if the given
statement is true and “BLUFF” if
otherwise.
 Research must always give correct or
accurate data.

 FACT
 Research and inquiry are exactly
synonymous.

 BLUFF!!!
 Research must be instrumental in
solving problems affecting the lives of
people in a community.

 FACT
 Good research report uses complicated
language.

 BLUFF !!!!!!
 Research must take place in an
organized or orderly manner.

 FACT
 Why do we need to understand the
nature and characteristics of research?
 How important is research to our life?
 Activity – A Picture that Paints a
Thousand Words
DIRECTIONS:
 A set of pictures will be flashed to you
one at a time. As the first picture is
shown, you have to pass a ball to the
person next to you at your respective
tables while singing the Filipino folk song
Bahay Kubo. When the teacher says
STOP, the one holding the ball will form a
question or problem about the given
picture. The procedure is repeated until
the last picture.
Think…
 How will you find the answers or
solutions to the questions or problems
you have formulated?
 Is research applicable in these
situations?
 Do you have any idea about the
methods of research that we can use in
these situations?
Qualitative vs Quantitative Data
Learning Objective
Differentiate quantitative from qualitative
Group Activity –Critique Me if You Can
 Each group shall give any
information that could be
obtained from the photograph of
the carabao.

 The group will write their output

in the Manila paper.
Each group will choose a representative
and share their insights or output.
Tell something about me
ANALYSIS
1. What are your important
observations about the data or
information in the activity?

2 Based on your evaluation,

which do you think is a
qualitative data? Which is a
quantitative data? Why?

Qualitative vs Quantitative Data
Qualitative Data Quantitative Data
Overview: Overview:
• Descriptions. • Deals with numbers.
• Data can be observed but • Data which can be measured.
not measured. • Length,
• Colors, • area,
• textures, • volume,
•smells, • weight,
•tastes, • speed,
•appearance, • time,
•beauty • temperature

•Qualitative → Quality • Quantitative → Quantity

Example 1: Oil Painting Example 1: Oil Painting
Qualitative data: Quantitative data:

• colors, • picture is 10" by 14”

• smells old and musty • with frame 14" by 18”
• texture shows brush strokes of oil paint • weighs 8.5 pounds
• peaceful scene of the park • 140 square inches
• masterful brush strokes • $300
Example 2: Latte Example 2: Latte
Qualitative data: Quantitative data:
• robust aroma • 12 ounces
• frothy appearance • temperature 1500 F.
• strong taste • serving cup 3 inches in height
• glass cup • cost $4.95
Example 3: 6th Grade Class Example 3: 6th Grade Class

Qualitative data: Quantitative data:

• friendly • 280 students
• Great Scientists • 148 girls
• Excellent students • 132 boys
• positive school spirit
