Chapter 1
 The main character of the novel Jagan is introduced.

 The novel opens with a line ‘ CONQUER TASTE AND you will have
conquered the self.’ Jagan has no idea why the sages have stated it.

 The novel gives many examples of false piousness. ‘Jagan sat under the
framed picture of Goddess Lakshmi hanging on the wall….’

 The cousin is introduced.

 Jagan is a Gandhian follower. It is depicted in the first chapter. ‘One must eat
only natural salt.’
 Jagan’s extreme Gandhian beliefs are portrayed in the chapter

 His extreme simple life style is also portrayed in the chapter.
