INTRODUCTION

• Flood is an unpredictable and unexpected phenomenon occurring from

time to time in river basins and natural drainage systems, which not only
damages the lives, natural resources, and environment but also causes
loss of economy and health.
• During July & August 2019, Sangli & Kolhapur districts in the Krishna
sub-basin experienced extreme floods for long durations.
• However, the 2019 flood event was comparatively much more severe
which lasted more than a week & losses experienced were also on a
higher scale.
LITERATURE REVIEW

• The evaluation of basin characteristics from the morphometric parameters

helps in understanding the physical behavior of the catchments with respect
to floods.
• Rainfall data of Sangli District were analyzed for drought investigation,
which may be used for long term planning of irrigation system in the area.
During 34 years period, three times drought was experienced which occurred
in 1972, 2005 and 2019. Rainfall data is of great importance of any
agricultural and non-agricultural programme. If proper and comprehensive
study of various rainfall data was analyzed, the severity and reoccurrence of
drought can be predicted and various measures can be taken to cope up with
the problems arising due to drought.
OBJECTIVES

1. To study the past flood occurs in the Krishna sub-basin.

2. To collect the rainfall data and special data in the Sangli region.

3. To study the software tool essential for map creation.

4. To prepare flood hazard zonation map for the selected area.

METHODOLOGY

• Required Sources of Data and Information have been collected from various
sources.
• Develop location map with the help of GIS & Remote Sensing.
• Morphometric analysis with the help of Toposheet (manually) and QGIS
(software).
• Study the past floods in Krishna basin.
STUDY AREA

The study area Krishna river sub basin extends between 740 16’ E to 740 59’ E Longitude And 160
80’N to 170 20’N Latitude and it covers the 1230.82sq.km area (Figure1). The
Krishna river basin is one of the Sub-basin of krushna River in Kolhapur district of the Maharashtra
state situated in western Maharashtra. The average height of this area is 840 m above mean sea level.
•STUDY AREA : KRISHNA SUB BASIN
• (Sangli district, Maharashtra)
•LONGITUDE : 740 16’ E to 740 59’ E
•LATITUDE : 160 80’ N to 170 20’ N
•AREA : 1230.82 km2

Digital Elevation Model

• Digital elevation models are in combination with other spatial data, an

important database for topography-related analyses or 3D video animations
(e.g. fly-troughs). Different georeferenced 3D products can be derived and
complemented by a coordinate system and presented in a 2D-map projection
or as a 3D perspective view. fig 2 shows digital elevation map of selected
study area.

Possible Outcome
1. Study the behavior of the river during past flood events in the study
area.
2. Study of causative factors for flood using the interpretation of spatial
data and related field observations.
3. Development of various Spatial maps required for study of flood
hazard zonation Mapping
4. Development of flood hazard zonation map of the study area.
