Sustainable Agriculture

MEANING

PRINCIPLES

S T R AT E G I E S
Meaning

Sustainable agriculture refers to undertaking agricultural activities in an environmentally safe manner, along
with economic and social considerations.

It integrates 3 main goals – Environmental management, economic profitability and social & economic
equity.

It offers innovative and economically viable opportunities for growers, labourers, consumers and policy
makers.
Principles
To meet the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of
the future generation to meet their own needs.

Careful management of natural resources so that it is available for a long term.

Management of human resources i.e. considerations of social responsibilities,

needs of rural communities & consumer health and safety.

It involves all stakeholders – consumers, farmers and policy makers.

Strategies for sustainable agriculture-
Grouped under 4 interrelated areas

1.Farming and natural resources – includes water harvesting and management;

Energy (renewable energy development; Air (to reduce pollution); Soil health
care

2. Plant and production practices: Selection of suitable species; diversification of

crops; efficient use of inputs.

3. Animal and livestock practices: appropriate animal selection, nutrition and

grazing strategies.
4. Economic, Social and Political context

- food and agriculture policy

- Land use

- Rural community development

- Consumer and food system

Sustainable
Industrialization
Meaning
Sustainable industrialisation is a long-term process of transformation
towards a desired vision of an industrialized economy. It contributes
to wealth creation, social development, and environmental
sustainability.
Context
Industries, traditionally, have been contributing to environment pollution.
Industries have contributed to land degradation and pollution, Air pollution,
water pollution and water stress as well as large scale waste management
issues. This trend is not sustainable as it will impact both the current
generation and the future generations. Sustainable industrialisation seeks to
develop practices or methods that would minimize wastage, maximize
reuse, and recycle, and have less negative effects on the environment.
1. Minimum usage of material in manufacturing a product. For example,
reduce the use of the quantity of steel required in motor vehicles.

2. Reduce or minimize energy use in the production process. Use materials

that are less energy intensive or use renewable energy sources.

Strategies 3. Shift from toxic to non-toxic materials like using degradable pesticides.

4. Shift from Coal and oil to solar, other renewable energy resources and
gas.

5. Utilize waste material from one industries as raw material in another

industry. For example bagasse from sugar industry to its use in the alcohol
industry.
6. Increase the use of recycled material.

7. Create products which are degradable.

8. Increasing water recycling.

9. Improved waste management strategies, including scientific treatment of wastes.

10. Proper Pricing of Water and Energy
Resource and environmental considerations must be
integrated into the industrial planning and decision-
making processes of government as well as industry.
This will allow a steady reduction in the energy and
resource content of future growth, increasing the
efficiency of resource use, reducing waste and
encouraging resource recovery and recycling.
