DR. FURRATAN
Interview
Today I am visiting Dr. Furratan and Dr. Deterville’s Clinic. This is a Pediatric Department located on the second floor of the first building. The
ground floor has offices of Primary care physicians. It is about 9:10 in the morning and I am planning to speak to one of the nurses Sylvia in
the clinic. Around 9:30 am Sylvia got a chance to speak to me. After I introduced myself to her and told her about my project she was eager to
help me. She told me that the normal clinic hours are from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm Monday to Friday. The morning hour from 8:30 am to 9:30 am
is reserved for Walk-ins. No appointment is necessary. Patients are served in the order they arrive. The only exception to that is the severity of
situation where they might be seen out of order or referred to urgent care or Emergency after a quick assessment. The rest of the day is
appointments only. Usually, after 3 pm, she takes phone messages and after discussing them with the doctor she returns the calls and
messages. Sylvia told me that this year they have been exceptionally busy during the flu season. They had a couple of waves of the flu Virus
which lead to an increased influx of Pediatric patients during Walk-In hours. The Clinic serves approximately 45 to 65 patients on normal days.
The number can almost double during flu season. Riverside Medical Clinic is a group of doctors working together. They have all major
specialties like pediatrics, OBGYN, Primary care, dermatology, ENT and an Urgent care with extended hours. The emergency cases are referred
to Corona Reginal Medical Center. Sylvia told me that almost all of their patients belong to middle socioeconomic status. They are all Insured.
Very few patients pay out of pocket upfront for their services. She said that the Primary care and orthopedic departments have a larger
population of elderly and retired. The rest of the departments serve a nice blend of community. Talking about the community outreach
programs she told me they have a community awareness program about childhood obesity. They also take part in California’s First Five.
SWOT ANALYSIS

In summary

Strengths: Extended business hours for busy individuals. Offering of classes for people to become more knowledgeable or certified, ie, CPR
classes.

Weaknesses: Faculty behavior to patients. Office Manager or HR person should be monitoring their behavior and professional etiquettes.

Opportunities: Hiring more people to meet demand of sick people, doctors, nurses.

Threats: Competition. When you can't give good service, people will leave and go elsewhere. When employees don’t care and it causes patients to
become more sick due to misdiagnosis or lack of cooperation for receiving copies of medical files. Everything comes at a cost, so in the process of
improving , the bottom line of this business will be affected.
Suggestions
According to yelp reviews, the manager of the clinic should be following up on personnel issues where the employees are being rude or giving out
incorrect information. Also they noted that many times they are on their cell phone chatting. HR definitely should look into the complaints.

Waiting times were also noted. A way to resolve this is to hire more doctors to accommodate the demand.

Add bike lanes to all the major streets in the area.Improve the availaibility of teen sex education and contraceptives to prevent teen pregnancy
and unsafe sexual practices since the clinic is located a couple of blocks away from a High School.
