WASHINGTON’S BARN
George Washington was an important man. He was brave soldier and US first
president. Washington was also a farmer. He learned the best ways to plant and
harvest crops.
• Wheat was an important crop for Washington. The kernels of wheat were ground
up to make flour. Getting the wheat kernels off wheat stalks was very hard. It took
too much time.
• Washington worked hard to solve this problem.
• Washington built a special barn that had two levels. The wheat was cut and
spread on the top floor of the barn. The top floor had small holes that were just
big enough for kernels to fit through.
Two horses came inside and walked around the wheat. The kernels came off the
stalks. They fell through the holes in the floor to the basement below.
Workers in the basement swept up the kernels. The wheat barn made the process
of getting wheat kernels and making flour easier and faster. Washington’s plan
worked very well.
