EXAMPLE 1
EXAMPLE 1: In the figure, the lines ST and UV are cut by a transversal
ABCD. Find the value of x and of y that will make ST || UV.
EXAMPLE 1: In the figure, the lines ST and UV are cut by a transversal
ABCD. Find the value of x and of y that will make ST || UV.

SOLUTION:
For ST to be parallel to UV, <UCB = <CBT
(alternate interior angles)
EXAMPLE 1: In the figure, the lines ST and UV are cut by a transversal
ABCD. Find the value of x and of y that will make ST || UV.

SOLUTION:
For ST to be parallel to UV, <UCB = <CBT
(alternate interior angles)
<UCB = <CBT
2x + 70 = 6x – 10
2x + 70 – 6x = 6x – 6x – 10
- 4x + 70 = - 10
- 4x + 70 – 70 = - 10 – 70
- 4x = - 80

x = 20
EXAMPLE 1: In the figure, the lines ST and UV are cut by a transversal
ABCD. Find the value of x and of y that will make ST || UV.

SOLUTION:
For ST to be parallel to UV, <UCD = <TBA
(alternate exterior angles)
EXAMPLE 1: In the figure, the lines ST and UV are cut by a transversal
ABCD. Find the value of x and of y that will make ST || UV.

SOLUTION:
For ST to be parallel to UV, <UCD = <TBA
(alternate exterior angles)

<UCD = <TBA
7y = 80 – y
7y + y = 80 – y + y
8y = 80

EXAMPLE 2: In the figure, ABC is a straight line. Find the
value of x that will make BE || CD.
EXAMPLE 2: In the figure, ABC is a straight line. Find the
value of x that will make BE || CD.
SOLUTION:
For BE to be parallel to CD, <EBC + <DCB =

(same-side interior angles)
EXAMPLE 2: In the figure, ABC is a straight line. Find the
value of x that will make BE || CD.
SOLUTION:
For BE to be parallel to CD, <EBC + <DCB =

(same-side interior angles)

<EBC + <DCB =
(<EBD + <DBC) + <DCB =180
(x + 20 + 2x – 10) + x + 37 =180
x + 47 =180
x + 47 - 47 = 180 – 47
x = 133
x = 133 ()
x= 35
