Definitions of Community
Etymology
Derived from the Latin word communitas
meaning “fellowship”.
Its Latin roots, communis, means
common. Com translates to “with” or
“together”; whereas munire translates to
“to strengthen”, “to fortify”, or “to
defend”
The term community has been
defined from different
perspectives based on
researches in various fields.
Social Science Perspective
• Views community as composed of people interacting
with one another, sensitive to each other’s emotions.
• This perspective examine social relations and human
society.
• From a social science perspective,
a community is described as a
group of people in a particular area
interacting together.
Fields of Social Sciences related to the idea of
COMMUNITY
1.Anthropology
TODAY’S VERSION
Anthropology
• Examines the various aspects of human
such as behavior, culture and social
interactions.
• Also study how people adapt the ways of
living to different environments
Economics
•Studies the production, allocation and
consumption of goods and services.
•The ultimate goal of this field is to improve the
lives of people, such that their needs are
satisfied.
Political Science
• This field explains the various ways and means of
allocating power, influence, and decision-making.
• This includes the types of governments and
management systems.
• The members of the society should understand
how its political system works and how power and
influence are distributed.
Psychology
• Studies the human mind and social behavior.
• This extends the interactions between the people
and interpersonal relationships.
• Psychology in general is most often associated with
the study, diagnosis, and treatment of mental
illnesses.
Sociology- Study of human social life.
Institutional Perspective
Institutions – are established rules that
ensure the regular and predictable
behavior of actors within a community.
Institutional Perspective
• Views the concept of community in three different
perspective
1st view
• It is an existing establishment or physical space
where members of the society go for a certain
purpose
Examples:
Companies, hospitals or educational institutions
2nd view
• Institutional community as a social model. This is
defined by networks and institutions where community
groups are formed in certain areas such as schools,
churches or companies wherein members gather to
meet their needs.
Example:
1. Students join clubs to hone
their skills
2. Join religious organizations to
deepen their faith
Civil Society Perspective
• Stresses the idea of forming a group, foundation or an
organization in service to society
• This is considered the affective model of community since a
sense of belonging is achieved due to the collaboration and
shared interests in serving the humanity.
• Group of people join together to render support and
assistance to society.
EXAMPLES:
ABS-CBN Foundation,
Human Rights Movement, Social Movements
Local and Grassroot
Perspective
• Highlights “volunteerism”
• Members in different communities may involve
themselves in various programs or activities.
• Self organization that encourages local citizens to
contribute to the society by taking responsibility
and actions.

Volunteers in a specific program
