THE SOLAR SYSTEM

PLANETS IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM
The Solar System is a planetary
system in the Milky Way
galaxy, consisting of the Sun
and its celestial bodies
gravitationally bound to it: eight
planets, at least 205 of their
moons, five dwarf planets, and
billions (and possibly even
trillions) of small bodies,
including asteroids, comets and
meteoroids.
SUN
The sun is the central star of the solar
system around which the earth and its
other planets, dwarf planets and the small
bodies of the solar system orbit. The sun
is made of hot plasma held by gravity and
shaped by a magnetic field.
MERCURY

Mercury is the smallest and closest planet

to the Sun in the Solar System. As an
inferior planet, it is always close to the
sun for the terrestrial observer, therefore
it is difficult to observe. Nevertheless, it
belongs to the planets visible to the naked
eye and was known in antiquity.
VENUS

Venus is the second most distant planet in

the Solar System. It is the third brightest
celestial body visible in the sky, after the
Sun and the Moon. Its observed
magnitude is −4.6, which is sufficient for
light reflected from Venus to produce
shadows.
EARTH

The Earth is the third planet from the Sun

and the fifth largest planet in the Solar
System. In terms of diameter, mass and
density, it is the largest rocky planet in
the solar system. The Earth is inhabited
by millions of species, including man.
MARS

Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun in

the Solar System. Named after the Roman
god of war - Mars, it owes it to a color
that appears rusty red when viewed from
Earth and was associated by the ancient
Romans with the conflagration of war.
The hue is due to the iron oxides covering
the surface.
JUPITER

Jupiter is the fifth largest planet from the

Sun and the largest planet in the Solar
System. Jupiter's mass is slightly less
than one thousandth of the mass of the
Sun, and two and a half times greater than
the combined mass of the other planets in
the solar system.
SATURN

Saturn is the sixth planet in the

solar system in terms of distance
from the Sun, second only to
Jupiter in terms of mass and size.
Also known as the gas giant.
URANUS

Uranus is the seventh planet in the solar

system from the sun, the third largest and
fourth largest. The planet is named after
Uranus, the Greek god, personification of
heaven, the father of Kronos and
grandfather of Zeus.
NEPTUNE

Neptune is the eighth most distant planet

in the solar system, the fourth largest in
diameter and the third largest. Neptune is
more than 17 times more massive than
Earth and slightly more massive than its
twin, Uranus, which is almost 15 times
more massive than Earth.
