The Common European Framework
of Reference (CEFR)

The CEFR is the international standard for describing language ability

It has six levels starting at A1 (basic) through to C2 (expert)

It describes what learners can do at each level of learning a language

It covers all four key language skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening

Cambridge Assessment English has been continuously involved in the


research and development of the CEFR

Each Cambridge English Qualification targets a particular level of the CEFR
