The names of the main actors
involved with the film are placed
at the top of the poster.
Including these will entice and
attract audiences to watch the
film as audiences will watch films
on the basic principal of who is
cast in the film.
Additionally, by having it in bold
draws the audience’s attention.

The actors names which are

placed on the second line are
there to indicate to the audience
who took over the role of Heath
Ledger’s portrayal of Tony, after
he died whilst making the film.
It would be important to state
these actors, as they are highly
famous and them taking over the
role was high profile and
publicised in the media.
Including the name of the
director, Terry Gillian, was
important as he could also entice
audiences to watch the film. It
would also inform the audience
on the type of film it would be, as
each director has their own
distinguishable style.
Having it presented in a different
coloured font makes it stand out
compared to the rest of the text.

The title of the film is presented

in a way which reflects the theme
of the film. This is that it is based
around a travelling show, and this
typography is commonly used was
types of shows and productions.
Having it in the largest font size
on the poster means that the
audience is instantly drawn to it.
This is important as it is the most
important piece of information
on the whole poster.
The images chosen on the poster
are very important. It is these
images which need to best
represent the film and its plot.

The image at the top of the poster,

is of two of the main characters
within the film. In particular,
Heath Ledger. This would be a
significant promotional feature as
his death was global news and
therefore having his face on a
poster would attract a global
audience on the fact that it was
his last film.
This particular image would also
be important as it suggests that
there is an element of romance
within the film.
At the bottom of the poster there
is also another image. This one
suggests more to the audience
about the plot of the film.

The inclusion of the mirror is

important as it is a central factor
in the plot of the film.

Inside mirror is also crucial to the

plot of the film. It shows the fantasy
world and the imagination of the
Doctor Parnassus. Including this
indicates to the audience on what to
expect within the film. Similarly, it
also shows that within the film there
is an element of CGI. The fact that it
is brighter than the rest of the
poster suggests that it is an ideal
place and it is the imagination as
they appear brighter than real life. It
could also represent the non-
naturalistic element of the film as it
juxtaposes the rest of the poster
which is based in real life.
The two men either side of the
mirror are designed to juxtapose
one another. Through the use of the
colour of the costumes and the
connotations associated with them,
it can represent that they play the
idea of good vs. evil. They in fact
portray God vs. the Devil within the
film. It also suggests that they are
opposing characters within the film.

Having them on either side of the

mirror could similarly suggest that
they are directly associated with the
mirror within the film.

By including close-up shots of the

actors faces at the bottom of the
poster, visually informs the
audience of the actors who are
involved within the film. This is in
case they do not recognise their
names from the top of the poster.
These images also reveal the
costumes which the actors wear,
which similarly informs the
audience what the film will be like.
In the background of the poster,
there is a washed-out version of
the title of the film “The
Imaginarium of Doctor
Parnassus”. This can reinforce the
idea of the film being based around
a travelling show, and in turn they
have their own poster for their
show.

Through the use of the striped

lighting and the colour of the
background it can be seen that
it reflects the fact that it is
based on a show.

By having light coming out of

and from behind the mirror
can relate back to the concept
of it being non-naturalistic. It
can similarly reinforce the idea
of God and the Devil and the
symbolism of religion within
the film.
By having the lights on the outer
sections of the poster also
reinforces the idea of the film
being based on a show and
production. It also makes the
overall poster more attractive
and appealing which would
attract the public. Finally, it
boarders the poster and
improves it aesthetics.

The use of the tiled floor can

suggest the idea of the film being
puzzling to the audience. The visual
effect that the chequered pattern
has can also relate to the effect the
film will have on the audience.
The fact that the chequered floor
extends out of the poster, achieves
the effect of an actual set and that
the chequered road leads into the
mirror. Thus, that characters go
into the mirror of their
imagination within the film.
As a whole this poster is
very effective in presenting
the audience the content of
the film.
It includes all the necessary
information needed, with
the exception of a release
date.
It incorporates the film’s
colour into the poster,
making it very striking and
attractive to the audience.
As a result it makes it an
effective form of
advertisement for the film,
“The Imaginarium of
Doctor Parnassus”.
