Biological effects MRI

Kuber Neupane
Bsc. RIT
Patient undergoing MR examination is exposed to
three different forms of EM Fields .
1. Static magnetic field.
2. Gradient magnetic field.
3. RF electromagnetic field.
Static magnetic field

It can increase the temperature .

It can cause electrical induction &
Some cardiac effect.
Scanning > 2 Telsa field strength can cause
 Vertigo
 Headache
 Peripheral Nerve stimulation
Gradient magnetic field

It can causes different things on humans such as

 ventricular fibrillation
 Visual flashes &
 Thermal Effects

*these effect are have not been significant in present MR system.

RF magnetic field

It can result energy deposition & tissue heating .

SAR increases with increase in field strength.
(Specific Absorption Rate)
Acoustic noise :
It is caused by vibration of gradient coils .
Noise increase with heavy duty cycles & sharper pulse transition .
Noise increase when
 thin Slice
 Small FOV
 Less TR & TE
