WEEK 1
Synopsis
This course provides a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to improve
students’ leadership skills. It highlights the importance of expanding the capacity of individuals to
perform in leadership roles within the civil organization of culturally diverse modern society. At its
core, leadership is an activity of leading a group of people or organization or the ability to do so,
and such activity or ability comes through relationship build via interaction or communication. It
involves, establishing vision, sharing that vision with the society so that they will follow willingly,
providing necessary information, knowledge and method to realize that vision, and coordinating
and balancing the conflicting interests of all units of the society. Moreover, given that, leadership
roles may be formal, with the corresponding authority to make decision and take responsibility, or
they may be informal roles with little official authority, this course also highlights the leadership
roles in facilitating the execution of organization’s strategy through building alignment, wining
mindshare and growing capabilities of others. Thus, each learning session of this course will be
closely tied to those matters, and therefore each student, at any time, complete self-directed
activity, in addition to the lectures, as a way enhance the learning experience, and improve
their leadership skills and quality.

Evaluation Method Description 1:Group Assignment/Project Paper
(30%)

The Group Assignment is 15 to 20 pages long essay which consists of four main parts: the
introductory paragraph or introduction (not less than 1 page long), the body of paragraph
(not less than 12 pages long), concluding paragraph (not less than 2 pages long), and
references (APA style & the essay should have not less than 5 references). The aim of the
project paper is to examine the importance of leadership in any specific society such as
tribal, agrarian, industrial and post-industrial society. This group assignment must be
submitted in the soft copy before Friday of week 12 via e-mail at mrationg@ums.edu.my or
smartv3ums, and that no late work will be accepted unless there is a proper documentation
that clearly demonstrates that circumstances, relatively beyond your control, prevented
the timely completion of the assignment. Only under the most extraordinary circumstances
which would be accompanied by proper documentation, will I accept the group assignment
after the last day of finals week. Note: The group for this assignment shall compose of 6 to
10 students only.
Evaluation Method Description 2: Group Presentation of Group Assignment:
(20%)

The group presentation of group assignment will be held by week 12 through online
platform such as Google Meet, Zoom, WebEx etc. Though it is called group presentation
session, each student will be evaluated individually. While the duration for group
presentation is 30 minutes, each individual student is given 3 minutes to present only. It
aims to examine how well each student in the group is in explaining the topic
assigned/their group project paper/assignment, and therefore grade deduction applies to
the students who have not turn up during presentation.
Evaluation Method Description 3: Individual Assignment (Poster)
(20%)

Each student is required to write an academic poster individually on the importance of


leadership in both stability and performance of a society. An academic poster is a graphic
and textual method of presenting information about the importance of leadership in the
stability and performance of a society which effectively balances the content (information)
and the layout (how information is presented).

The academic poster should include the following content:

i. Title of the poster - it must be short (not more than 10 words);


ii. You should present your poster in virtual format:
a. The poster must be submitted via smartv3ums or e-mail at mrationg@ums.edu.my before Friday of week 10;
b. It must be attention-grabbing/visually attractive and readable from the distance;
c. It is free from grammatical and spellings issues;
d. Illustration: it involves pictorial representation, i.e. a drop of water, images of professionals, etc;
e. Contact information: The students should make their student’s information available in the poster (i.e. Student’s
Name, Metric Number, Name of Program); and
f. It must fit within 1 page only.

Evaluation Method Description 3: Online Final Test
(30%)

Each student is required to do the online final test which will be conducted on week 11 via
Smartv3ums. It will cover all topics being discussed in the class. It will be either in the form
of short essay, true/false and multiple-choice answer, and that the total number of
questions for the test will be 5 questions for short essay, and 60 questions for true/false or
multiple-choice answer type of online final test.

ATTENDANCE
Teaching and learning (PdP) of this course will be conducted

Attendance for online class is compulsory. However, students are
02 given two-excused absence with proper documentation that clearly
stated the reason of absence.

For every unexcused absence, over 2 points will be deducted from your final
03 grade with a maximum of 6 points being deducted from the final grade.
Proper documentation must be in the form of official letters/memos from
an objective third party such as Doctor, and it does not include notes from
parents and friends. Such documentation must be given to me as soon as
possible. Also, if you are absent, it is your responsibility to obtain notes
from your classmates
