Questions

1. Determine the layout of the floor framing and the size of a composite floor de
ck assuming normal-weight concrete. Assume a self-weight of 8 psf for the fr
aming.

2. Design the framing members and select a sufficient section for each of them.
Use W shapes (Fy = 50 Ksi) for beams, girders and Columns. Assume 8in of th
e floor deck is cantilevered around the building layout.

3.Design a base plate for the selected column.

1st question
Givens:
 Self-weight = 8 psf.
 Dead load =70 psf.
 Live load =80 psf.
 Floor framing plan consist of 24-ft. by 36-ft. bay.

-Dead load on the floor deck alone = 70 - 8 = 62 psf.

-Live load = 80 psf.
-The total floor load = 62 + 80 = 142 psf.

-Try 2.5-in. concrete slab on 3-in. by 20-ga galvanized composite metal deck.
(refer to the Vulcraft Steel Roof and Floor Deck Manual) or similar deck manufacturer
s’ catalogs.
-Total Slab Depth = 2.5 in. + 3 in. = 5.5 in.
For the 3-span condition, we find from the deck load tables that Maximum allowable
deck span without shoring during construction = 11 ft. 9 in.
1st question

-Self-weight of concrete = 50 psf. and self-weight of deck = 2 psf.

-Total floor deck and concrete slab self-weight = 52 psf.

-Applied superimposed load on deck/slab = The total floor load- Total floor deck and conc
rete slab self-weight
Applied superimposed load on deck/slab = 142- 52 = 90 psf

-span for this particular deck without shoring when it spans over a minimum of three
spans. 24/3= 8

It should be noted that the deck span selected must be less than or equal to 11 ft. 9 in whi
ch is the maximum allowable span for this particular deck without shoring when it
spans over a minimum of three spans. In addition, the selected deck span must be a mult
iple of the shorter bay dimension.
1st question

-Try a 8-ft. 0-in. span < 11 ft. 9 in. OK

-Allowable superimposed load =223 psf > 90 psf Ok.

-Therefore, use 2.5-in. concrete slab on 3-in. by 20-ga galvanized composite metal deck.
2nd question

GIVEN:
 Floor dead load = 70 psf.
 Floor live load = 80 psf.
 Typical floor framing plan consists of = 24-ft. by 36 ft.
 Fy = 50 Ksi.
 Cantilever around the floor deck = 8in. = 0.66
2nd question
The Exterior beam
1. Determine Loads
Calculate the uniform load imposed on The Beam . The load tributary area for The
Beam is a section of floor 8 ft × 36 ft. The uniformly distributed loads (w) on the Beam are:
Conversion = 8/12= 0.66
8/2= 4
4 + 0.66= 4.66
4.66 x 36= 167.8 ft.

WDL= 70 lb/ft2 x 4.66 ft. = 326.2/1000= 0.33 k/ft.

WLL=80 lb/ft2 x 4.66ft. = 372.8/1000= 0.37 k/ft.

WTL= 0.33 k/ft + 0.37 ft.= 0.7 k/ft.

Wu= 1.2 WDL+ 1.6 WLL = (1.2x 0.33)+(1.6x0.37)= 0.98 k/ft.

2nd question
2.Determine Reactions, Max Shear, Max Moment
L(length) = 36

Wu =0.98 k/ft.

Reaction (Ru)
Ru= WuL/2
Ru=(0.98x36)/2= 17.6 K.

Maximum shear (Vu)

Vu=Ru
Vu=17.6 K.

Maximum Moment(Mu)
Mu=WuL2/8= (0.98x362)/8
=158.8 k-ft. (Required Flexural Strength)
2nd question
3. Resisting Moment
Calculate the Required Section Modulus (Zx)

= 158.8 x12/0.9x50
=42.3 in3.

Mu=158.8 k-ft.

From AISC Table 3-2 (W-Shapes), select a shape with an available Zx equal to or gre
ater than that required.
A W18×35 shape with an available Zx of 66.5 in³ is the closest (but still greater) value
to the required Zx of 42.3 in³. Ok.
Also note that this shape’s available flexural strength of 249-ft, is greater than the req
uired flexural strength of 158.8 k-ft. Ok.
2nd question
4. Checking for Shear
From AISC Table 3-2,
 Available shear strength = 159 k.
Required shear strength = 17.6 k.
Since the available shear strength is greater than the required shear
strength, the W18×35 is acceptable.
2nd question
5. Checking for Deflection

-For deflection load we use service load or unfactored load.

WDL= 70 lb/ft2 x 4.66 ft. = 326.2/1000= 0.33 k/ft.

WLL=80 lb/ft2 x 4.66ft. = 372.8/1000= 0.37 k/ft.

WTL= 0.33 k/ft + 0.37 ft.= 0.7 k/ft.

For the 36 ft long W18x35 beam, assure that its

maximum deflection is equal to or less than its
allowable deflection for both live load (alone) and
total load (dead + live).
2nd question
Live Load Deflection
-Maximum Deflection for the W44x335 Beam

=5(0.37x36x[36x12]3)/384x29000x510
=0.95
WLL=Unifrom live load= 13.4 k/ft.

-Allowable Deflection for the W18x35 Beam L(length) = 36 ft.

Ix (moment of inertia)=510 in4.

=(36x12)/360= 1.2 in.

-The live load maximum deflection is less than the live load allowable
deflection, the shape W18x35 is acceptable for live load deflection.
0.95<1.2 Ok.
2nd question
Total Load Deflection
-Maximum Deflection for the W18x35 Beam

=5(0.7x36x[36x12]3)/384x29000x510
=1.7 Ok.

-Allowable Deflection for the W18×35 Beam

=(36x12)/240= 1.8 in.

-The total load maximum deflection is less than the total load allowable
deflection, the shape W18x35 is acceptable for total load deflection.
2nd question
Interior Girder
First we calculate Interior beam

WDL = 70 × 8 = 560 ib/ft = 0.56 k/ft

WLL = 80 × 8 = 640 ib/ft = 0.64 k/ft
WTL = 0.56 + 0.64 = 1.2 k/ft

Wu = 1.2 W DL + 1.6 W LL
Wu = 1.2( 0.56) + 1.6( 0.64)
Wu = 1.7 k/ft

Reaction (Ru)
Ru = WuL / 2
Ru = (1.7 x 36 ) / 2
Ru = 30.60 K
2nd question
Interior Girder

Pu = Ru x 2
= 30.60 x 2
= 61K

Reaction (Ru)
Ru = Pu = 61 K

Maximum Shear (Vu)
Vu = Ru
Vu = 61 K
(Required shear strength)

Maximum moment (Mu)
Mu = PL / 3
Mu = (61 x 24 ) / 3

Mu (Required Flexural Strength)= 488 K-ft

2nd question

Z x = (488 x 12) ÷ ( 0.9 x 50 )

Z x = 130.1 in³
Z x = (488 x 12) ÷ ( 0.9 x 50 )
Z x = 130.13 in³

Z x(available) = 134
Vu(available) = 251
I x(available) = 1350
PLL= Wll *36 = 0.64 * 36 = 23
PtL= Wtl *36 = 43
PdL= Wdl *36 = 20.16

2nd question

= 0.036 x 23 x( 24 x12 )³ ÷ ( 29000 x 1350) = 0.5 Ok.

Allowable Deflection for the W24×55 Girder

=( 24 x12 ) / 360 = 0.8 Ok.

-W24×55 is acceptable for live load deflection beacause the live load maximum
deflection is less than the live load allowable deflection.

= 0.036 x 43 x( 24 x12 )³ ÷ ( 29000 x 1350 )

= 0.94
Allowable Deflection for the W24×55 Girder
= ( 24 x12 ) ÷ 240 = 1.2 > 0.9 Ok.

-So W24×55 is acceptable for total load deflection, so we select it.

2nd question
Corner column design
-height (L) = 15 ft
-k-factor = 1
-effective length Le = kL = 15 ft
Floor Loads
-cantilevered part = 8 in = 0.67
-load tributary area for corner column= 18.67 ft*12.67 ft=236.5ft 2
DL= 70x 236.5 = 16555/1000 = 16.6k
LL= 80 x236.5= 18920/1000 = 18.9k

Applying the governing LRFD floor load combination

PU= 1.2 D + 1.6 L=(1.2x16.6)+(1.6x18.9) = 50.2 K

-Total load of 2 floors =50.2x2 = 100.40k

2nd question
- Roof loads
-load tributary area for corner column = 18.67 ft*12.67 ft=236.5ft2
DL= 30 x236.5 = 7086/1000 = 7.1 k
LL= 35x236.5 = 8260/1000= 8.3 k.

Pu= 1.2 DL + 1.6 LL =(1.2*7.1)+(1.6*8.3) =21.8 k

Total load of floors and roof on corner column

Total load = roof load + 2 floor loads

Total load = 21.8 + (2 x 50.2) = 122.2 K
Pu=122.2 k

2nd question
-The section

KL/r = 60 and using Fy= 50 ksi

From AISCM table 4-22 , ∅Fcr=34.6 ksi

Required area = P_u/∅F_cr
= 122.2 /34.6 =3.53 〖 in 〗 ^2

Try W8X28 (A= 8.24 ,rx=3.45 in ,ry=1.62 in )
r min= ry=1.62in
 KL/r=(15×12 in/ft)/1.62 =111.1 <200 Ok

2nd question

2nd question
- From AISCM table 4-22 ∅F_cr=18.3
∅P_n=∅F_cr A_g
∅P_n=18.3×8.24=150 .8 >122.2 K. Ok
3rd question
Base Plate
A base plate is to be designed for a W8x 28 column (Fy= 50 ksi)
Select an A36 plate (Fy= 36 ksi) to cover the entire area of the 3 ksi concrete pedestal
underneath.

-Using a W8 x 28 column (d=8.06 , bf=6.54)

3rd question
 Pu=1.2(PD)+1.6(PL)= (1.2x423) + (1.6x482.4)=1280 k

A1x3x1)=73.7 in2

A1 min

A1

=0.5(0.95 d-0.80bf)= 0.5(0.95x8.06-0.80x6.54)=1.2 in.

N= + = +1.2=9.78 in. say 10 in.

B=A1/N = B=73.7/10=7.37 in. say 7 in.

Check the bearing strength of the concrete

= 0.65(0.85x3x10x9)x(1) = 149.2k >122.2 Ok.

3rd question
Computing required base plate thickness

m= N-0.95*d/2 = 10 -0.95*8.06/2 = 1.17 in.

n= B-0.8*bf/2 = 7-0.8*6.54/2 = 0.88 in.

 n’=/4 = /4 = 1.8 in.

Therefore l= 1.8

= 1.8 = 0.6 in.
