Cable Assessments Overview

2009 & 2010 2013 2014

• 293 cables • 150 cables • 117 cables
• VLF test only • VLF, IRC and PI tests • VLF & IRC tests
• Comprehensive • Selective assessment on • Selective assessment on
assessment 15 cables 17 cables
• 19 cables recognized as • 18 cables needed an • In progress
high risk immediate replacement
Very Low Frequency (VLF)

• Less than 1 Hz
• Withstand & Diagnostic Tests
• Most commonly TD, DTD, TDST
• Test results affected by:
• Water trees
• Corroding metallic shields
• Insulation moisture
• Degraded accessories.
Very Low Frequency (VLF)

• Theory:

•
Very Low Frequency (VLF)

• Procedure:

•
• Measure TD at
• Calculate DTD = TD() – TD()
• Calculate TDTS: Standard Deviation of TD()
Very Low Frequency (VLF)

• Results:
IEEE 400.2 Criteria is applied:

Healthy Cable Graph Unhealthy Cable Graph

Isothermal Relaxation Current (IRC)
• Theory & Procedure:
• IRC is a non-destructive test.
• Charging profile of the cable is produced
• Profile is compared to a data base of profiles for different cables having similar parameters.
• Condition of cables is then determined.
Isothermal Relaxation Current (IRC)
• Results:

A-Factor <1.75 [1.75,1.9] [1.9,2.1] > 2.1
