FRICTION AND GRAVITY

FRICTION

 Friction -is a force between two surfaces that are sliding, or

trying to slide, across each other. example, when you try to
push a book along the floor, friction makes this difficult.

NOTE

 Friction always works in the direction opposite to the

direction in which the object is moving, or trying to move.
 Friction acts in the opposite direction to the way an object
wants to move
 Friction also acts as brakes on my feet.Without it.I won’t be
able to step forward, backward and stop whenever I want to

08/19/2021 3
 Friction is one of the things you work against every time you
apply a force to move an object.

SLIDING OR ROLLING FRICTION

 Rolling Friction-act on moving objects like on a skateboard’s

or car’s wheels.
 Static Friction-act when you first push or move an object
across a surface.

GRAVITY

08/19/2021 6
WHAT IS GRAVITY?

 The answer is gravity: an invisible force that pulls objects

toward each other. Earth's gravity is what keeps you on the
ground and what makes things fall.
 Albert Einstein described gravity as a curve in space that
wraps around an object—such as a star or a planet.

DID YOU KNOW?

 Earth’s pull is greater when I’m on its surface.it is a little bit

less when you’re riding an airplane

LAWS OF MOTION

 Sir Isaac Newton related frictional and gravitational forces to

the motion of objects in his Laws of Motion discussed in his
book Principia,dated 1686

08/19/2021 9
1ST LAW OF MOTION

 Newton's first law states that, if a body is at rest or moving at

a constant speed in a straight line, it will remain at rest or
keep moving in a straight line at constant speed unless it is
acted upon by a force

08/19/2021 10
2 N D LAW OF MOTION

 Newton's second law states that the acceleration of an object

is directly related to the net force and inversely related to its
mass. Acceleration of an object depends on two things, force
and mass

08/19/2021 11
3 R D LAW OF MOTION

 The third law of motion states that if a body exerts a force on

a second body, the second body exerts a force that is equal in
magnitude and opposite in direction to the first force. So for
every action force there is always a reaction force

INERTIA

 Inertia- is the tendency of an object to remain at rest or in

constant motion unless a force acts on it.

INFLUENCE OF GRAVITY

 When you drop something, the object falls faster or

accelerates as it moves downward. This is called Free fall.
 Gravity pulls the object towards the ground when the only
force acting on an object is gravity.
