Ventilation Standards
0 Ventilation rate measure is the air change rate (or air changes
per hour): the hourly ventilation rate divided by the volume
of the space (I or ACH; units of 1/h).

0 ANSI/ASHRAE Standards 62.1 and 62.2 are the

recognized standards for ventilation system design and
acceptable indoor air quality (IAQ).

0 Both standards specify minimum ventilation rates and other

measures in order to minimize adverse health effects for
occupants.
Purpose of ventilation Standards

0 To specify minimum ventilation rates and other measures

intended to provide indoor air quality that is acceptable to
human occupants and that minimizes adverse health effects.

0 This standard is intended for regulatory application to new

buildings, additions to existing buildings, and those changes to
existing buildings that are identified in the body of the
standard.

0 This standard is intended to be used to guide the improvement

of indoor air quality in existing buildings.
SCOPE
0 applies to spaces intended for human occupancy
within buildings.
0 This standard defines requirements for ventilation
and air-cleaning-system design, installation,
commissioning, and operation and maintenance.
0 Additional requirements for laboratory, industrial,
health care, and other spaces may be dictated by
workplace and other standards, as well as by the
processes occurring within the space.

Sample calculation of ventilation requirement
0 For a lecture classroom of 1000sq.ft floor area and
50 students

0 Cfm required = (cfm /person )*no of person

+(cfm/sq.ft)* floor area
=7.5*50 +0.06*1000 = 435 cfm
ACPH = (CFM *60)/(Area *Height)
= (435*60)/(1000*10)
= 2.61 ACPH
It means that entire room air needs to changed 2.61 times
in one hour for optimum indoor air quality.
