What’s a “SmartCache”?
Smart Cache is a type of backup to disk device that enables non-staged recovery from VMware
backups. Smart Cache is based on JBODs (Just a Bunch Of Disks), an architecture using multiple hard
drives. This means that mount points, for Smart Cache to operate on, can be any one of the following:

• NAS share (CIFS and NFS)

• Disk (SAN, iSCSI, local) formatted with file system
• Cluster file systems

Smart Cache is configured through the Data Protector MFC GUI similar to how a Backup to Disk
StoreOnce device is configured. It should be noted that Smart Cache is supported only on Windows
x64 and Linux x64 operating systems.

Note: Smart Cache device is available as targets only for VMware backups.
