Fractions

WHAT IS A FRACTION?

 When an object is divided into a


number of equal parts, then each
part is called a fraction
 
A fraction is a number written in the form

where a and b are whole numbers and b is


not zero.

There are several kinds of Fractions.

1. PROPER FRACTION

- A fraction in which the numerator is less


than the denominator.

2. IMPROPER FRACTION

- a fraction whose numerator is bigger


than the denominator.

3. Mixed Fraction

- combination of a whole number and a


fraction.

In changing improper fractions to
mixed fractions, follow these steps.

1. Divide the numerator by the


denominator.

a. if there is no remainder, then the improper


fraction is equal to the quotient found in step 1.
b. if there is a remainder, then the improper
fraction can be written as:

In changing mix fractions to improper
fractions, follow these steps.

1. Multiply the denominator with the


whole number then add the result with the
numerator.

numerator then copy the denominator.
