STS MODULE F:

ECOSYSTEMS, GLOBAL
ENVIRONMENTALISM, BIODIVERSITY
AND CLIMATE CRISIS
Topic Learning Outcomes
At the end of the module, students should be able to :

• Define ecosystem, biodiversity and global environmentalism

• Identify the importance of biodiversity
• Explain how the disappearance of one species affects other species
• Discuss how we are all part of one global environment and relate this
concept with our problems on climate change and biodiversity loss.
Check Module F for Pre-Discussion Activity

Biodiversity
Humans have lived for just 200,000 years, but our impact on Earth is so
outstanding that scientists around the world are calling for our period in
the Earth’s history to be named the ‘Anthropocene'.

Biodiversity

• refers to the variety of life on

Earth- plants, animals,
microorganisms

• includes the variability of these

organisms, genetic differences
among the organisms and the
communities in which these
organisms occur
Data show that species are
becoming extinct 100 times faster
than they would without human
impacts.

Biodiversity as part of the solution to climate change

By 2030, nature can provide at least 30% of the emission reductions to

prevent climate catastrophe.

Forests and wetland ecosystems serve as crucial buffers to extreme typhoons and
flooding related to climate change. These ecosystems are more resilient to the
impacts of climate change.
