Why Secured Destruction is important!

Secured destruction of data is gaining importance

both in corporate as data theft cases continue to rise

Data privacy has become an integral part of

organsiation’s data management policy

Data can be retrieved from HDD even when data is

deleted.

Many Clients of IT / ITes companies require them to

destroy their old unusable data in a fullproof manner.

When does data need to be destroyed?

Data Transfer from one hardware to another

Change in Hardware

When data becomes outdated and useless

Destruction of old hardware

Clients of IT / ITes companies require them to destroy

data in timely fashion

Conventional way of data destruction

Physical hammering of hardware to destroy the hard disc

• Drilling holes, hitting with a hammer, running over with a truck etc.

Erasing the data through over writing using software

• Only adds layers to existing data. Information is still there until new data
is completely filling the drive
• Requires technical expertise and supervision of process. In both
• Disk Drive must be in perfect working order the cases
• Nearly five times the cost of degaussing the data
can be retrieved
• Process started again if unsuccessful
even after
• Takes 4 to 6 hours for 1 HDD destruction

What is Degaussing?

Degaussing in simple term means erasing information from a magnetic disk or a

storage device. In other words it is elimination of the magnetic field in the hard
disc to remove the data .

A Degausser can completely erase all audio, Video and data signals from
magnetic storage media.

Degaussing is the process of reducing or eliminating an unwanted magnetic field (or data)
stored on tape and disk media such as computer and laptop hard drives, diskettes, reels,
cassettes and cartridge tapes. When exposed to the powerful magnetic field of a
degausser, the magnetic data on a tape or hard disk is neutralized, or erased.
• Using the right degausser will guarantee that information is no longer retrievable.
• Degaussers contain a controlled magnetic field that is measured in units of gauss or
oersteds (Oe).
• All magnetic media has a magnetic property, called coercivity, that is also measured in
units of oersteds (Oe).
• The Oersted (Oe) value tells us how easy or how difficult a piece of media is to erase.
Basically, higher Oe media requires stronger degausser magnetic field ratings.

HDD Components

Platters - The platters are the circular discs inside the The Spindle - The spindle keeps the platters in position
hard drive where the 1s and 0s that make up your files and rotates them as required. The revolutions-per-
are stored. Platters are made out of aluminum, glass or minute rating determines how fast data can be written

platters are used to increase the overall capacity of the slower speeds are available. The spindle keeps the
drive. Data is stored on the the platters in tracks, sectors platters at a fixed distance apart from each other to
and cylinders to keep it organized and easier to find. enable the read/write arm to gain access.

The hard drive has

four key components
inside its casing.
The Read/Write Arm - The read/write arm controls
the movement of the read/write heads, which do the Actuator - The actuator or head actuator is a small
actual reading and writing on the disk platters by motor that takes instructions from the drive's circuit
converting the magnetic surface into an electric board to control the movement of the read/write arm
current. The arm makes sure the heads are in the right and supervise the transfer of data to and from the
position based on the data that needs to be accessed platters. It's responsible for ensuring the read/write

Types of HDD

IDE : Integrated Drive Electronics. IDE drives are also known

as PATA drives( Parallel advance technology attachment )
Faster
SATA : Serial advance technology attachment
Robust

SCSI : Small Computer System Interface. SCSI is pronounced Flexible

as scuzzy.

SAS : Serial Attached SCSI

Difference in
• Power Consumption
• How they attach to the device
• Size
• Portability

How Degaussing Works

How data is recorded on HDD?

The circular piece of metal, called a platter, contains a fine coating of

iron oxide or chromium dioxide. The platter spins beneath a
read/write head. When small pulses of electricity are passed
through a coil in the head, the surface of the platter becomes
magnetized. Data is recorded using binary code, a series of 1s and
0s

A degausser erases by generating a magnetic field so powerful that it

permanently removes the magnetic properties from the iron oxide
or chromium dioxide coatings which erases, or randomizes, the
recorded data pattern.

Significance of CE Certificate

CE marking is a certification mark that indicates conformity with

health, safety, and environmental protection standards for products
sold within the European Economic Area (EEA). The CE
marking is also found on products sold outside the EEA that are
manufactured in, or designed to be sold in, the EEA.

CE Certificate is available in HSD & Garner Degaussers both.
