Chain

A chain is a serial assembly of connected pieces, called links,

typically made of metal, with an overall character similar to that of a
rope in that it is flexible and curved in compression but linear, rigid,
and load bearing in tension.
A chain may consist of two or more links.
Chains can be classified by their design, which is dictated by their use.
Chains have been used for centuries to drive machines and move
materials on conveyors and up escalator.

3
Types of chain

Roller chains
(1) Standard single-strand roller chain
(2) Standard multiple-strand roller chain
(3) Double-pitch power transmission roller chain
Silent chains
Engineering steel chains
Flat-top chains

4
(1) Standard Single-Strand Roller Chain

The most commonly used chain

for drives is the single-strand
series roller chain.
The horsepower rating capacities
of these chains cover a wide
range of drive load requirements.

5
(2) Standard Multiple-Strand Roller Chain

Multiple-strand roller chains are A multiple-strand chain with

used to provide increased power smaller pitch can be run at a
capacity without the need for higher speed than single-strand
increasing the chain pitch or its roller chain of larger pitch.
linear speed.

6
(3) Double-Pitch Power Transmission Roller Chain

The double-pitch series of drive

chains is similar to the standard
series (having the same pin,
bushing and roller diameters).
{Expect that the pitch is twice
that of the standard chain}
This form of double-pitch roller
chain normally has figure-eight-
shaped link plates.

The necessary conditions for
sprocket are as follows
(1) The form and pitch of the
teeth must be precise and
uniform.
